Dominik Szoboszlai's freshly signed Liverpool deal arrived alongside a clear declaration: he has his eyes firmly set on lifting the Champions League.
Liverpool's standout performer for 2025–26 had just two years remaining on his previous deal, drawing interest from Real Madrid that was only fueled further by certain remarks made by his agent.
Yet, the 25-year-old has swiftly put an end to that transfer talk by penning a new deal running through to the summer of 2031.
"I want to win everything that is possible in this country," Szoboszlai told Liverpool's official website upon the announcement of his new terms, "also let's say the Champions League. I'm ready to go for it."
It's an ambitious statement from a player at a club that spent much of last season struggling to even secure a place in the competition, let alone challenge for the title. Szoboszlai himself notably suggested that Liverpool "should be happy with the Conference League" given the poor performances that defined Arne Slot's final campaign at the helm.
Nevertheless, the managerial change appears to have sparked a renewed sense of optimism at Anfield. Andoni Iraola, despite limited experience at a club of this stature, is expected to bring an energetic and dynamic style of play to help Liverpool recapture past glories. Whether that translates into Champions League success remains uncertain, but keeping Szoboszlai in the fold makes that ambition considerably more attainable.
Why Szoboszlai's Contract Is So Important—for Him and Liverpool
Liverpool's tireless midfielder was eager to emphasize just how meaningful his contract extension truly was. "It's maybe my biggest day," Szoboszlai said enthusiastically. "There are a couple ahead of it—probably when I first signed for Liverpool and when my baby was born, of course. But in my football career, I can say this is in the top three.
"Very happy. [I] can't wait to go again and again and again. I'm just happy to be here, as I said many times."
Netting his first goal at Anfield, winning over the hearts of Merseyside, or claiming the Premier League title all paled in comparison for Szoboszlai. While signing for a club with Liverpool's rich history was momentous in itself, securing an extension—a concrete vote of confidence for the next five years—is a milestone worth celebrating for everyone involved.
Securing Szoboszlai's commitment also brings a halt to a troubling run of Liverpool players departing for Real Madrid. In 2025, lifelong fan Trent Alexander-Arnold was tempted away to the Spanish capital—echoing the journey made by fellow Englishman Steve McManaman two decades prior. Earlier this summer, lengthy negotiations with Ibrahima Konaté ultimately concluded with the French centre-back also making the move to Real Madrid.
During those tense negotiations, Konaté alleged that Liverpool had intentionally allowed contract talks to drift into the final year of his deal. "This is negotiations," he said dismissively. "With Virgil [van Dijk] and Mo [Salah] last season it was exactly the same to sort the contract."
There would be no such games of brinkmanship with Szoboszlai.
The security of the key midfielder's future arrives amid significant turbulence in the club's boardroom. Chief soccer officer Michael Edwards has stepped down, while sporting director Richard Hughes has been repeatedly linked with a switch to Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia.
Following the thoroughly disappointing transfer window of last summer—both in terms of new arrivals and the underwhelming form of those handed fresh contracts—locking Szoboszlai in represents a long-overdue move in the right direction.
