Teenage Sensation Lamine Yamal Matches Mbappe's Legendary Champions League Scoring Milestone

Lamine Yamal etched his name alongside Kylian Mbappé's in the Champions League record books on Tuesday evening after scoring in Barcelona's 4–2 loss to Paris Saint-Germain.

What turned out to be a disappointing end to Barcelona's unbeaten run still offered personal highlights for Yamal. The 19-year-old Ballon d'Or contender delivered yet another stunning solo effort in the second half of the Champions League clash, bursting past makeshift left back Warren Zaïre-Emery before slotting past Matvey Safonov from a seemingly impossible angle.

With his strike, Yamal became the first player across Europe's top five leagues to record at least 10 goals and 10 assists in 2026–27. As a result, he has had a direct hand in 40% of Barça's 50 goals this campaign.

Ahead of the PSG fixture, Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick had declared his in-form winger "the best player in the world right now."

Yamal Draws Level With Mbappé

Yamal's goal in Paris on Tuesday was his 13th in the Champions League, drawing him level with Kylian Mbappé for the most goals in the competition as a teenager.

Mbappé—one of Yamal's fiercest rivals for the Ballon d'Or later this month—netted 13 times across 23 appearances for Monaco and PSG. Yamal, in contrast, reached that tally over 36 matches.

However, since he won't turn 20 until next July, he is almost certain to claim the record outright in the near future.

Looking further down the line, the Barcelona star needs eight more goals to surpass the record for the highest scorer before the age of 21—a benchmark currently set by Erling Haaland.

Defining Clásico Up Next for Yamal

Lamine Yamal

Following their first defeat of 2026–27, Barcelona face a demanding stretch of fixtures with Real Madrid next on the agenda in the season's opening Clásico on Sunday, Oct. 25. It's yet another stage where Yamal has a habit of making history.

The teenager holds the distinction of being both the youngest player to appear and score in the Clásico, having made his debut in the storied fixture at just 16 years and 107 days old. Exactly one year later, he netted the third goal in a dominant 4–0 triumph at the Bernabéu to cement his place in the record books.

Across nine appearances against Barcelona's fiercest rivals, Yamal has contributed three goals and two assists to date.

Although voting has already closed, one of the key storylines heading into Sunday's match will be the head-to-head between two Ballon d'Or favorites: Yamal and Mbappé. Both stars have been vocal in their campaigns for football's most prestigious individual award in the weeks building up to the ceremony, set to be held in London the day after the Clásico on Oct. 26.

"I genuinely believe there are two of us who are the best in the world, and this year I deserve it based on what I've achieved," Yamal told Spanish broadcaster Movistar+ last month.
