Chelsea are said to be "optimistic" about securing Brighton & Hove Albion's Danny Welbeck as they "explore" a potential deal for the 35-year-old forward.
The Blues are keen to bring in an experienced Premier League presence to bolster Xabi Alonso's youthful and inexperienced squad ahead of the upcoming season, having already seen a bid for Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka fall through.
Chelsea are also keeping tabs on former Manchester City defender John Stones, who is currently without a club, and surprising links to Brentford stalwart Jordan Henderson have emerged, but The Athletic have now confirmed the Blues are in the early stages of discussions with Brighton regarding Welbeck.
The ex-Arsenal and Manchester United striker has matured impressively on the south coast, netting a remarkable 13 Premier League goals last season to follow up the 10 he scored the campaign before.
Alonso is believed to hold the veteran in high regard as both a "player and leader," seeing him as a perfect role model for the club's younger talents. Should Welbeck complete the move, he would join a growing list of Brighton players to have made the switch to Stamford Bridge, including Robert Sánchez, João Pedro and Moisés Caicedo, all currently in the squad.
Why Chelsea Want to Sign Clinical Welbeck
While pursuing Welbeck represents a significant departure from Chelsea's established transfer philosophy of targeting the world's most sought-after young talents, it could turn out to be a remarkably shrewd piece of business for several reasons.
To begin with, the England international would bring a much-needed goal threat. A sharp penalty-area finisher, he could comfortably hit double figures for the Blues across all competitions, offering a clinical impact from the bench that the club has been desperately missing of late.
Only eight players outscored Welbeck in the Premier League last season, with Pedro the only Chelsea player to finish above him. Among players who attempted 30 or more shots, just four boasted a better conversion rate than his 23%.
Secondly, Welbeck represents a financially sensible option given his age and the fact he has just one year remaining on his Brighton contract. No potential transfer fee has been disclosed as yet, however.
And finally, he is well-versed in the demands placed on players at a traditional 'Big Six' club, while also offering priceless leadership qualities to a squad that is notably short on experienced figures. Currently, Chelsea's oldest squad members are just 28 years old.
What Does Welbeck Deal Mean for Chelsea's Strikers?
Chelsea were not widely expected to pursue another centre forward given the attacking options already at their disposal—even if some of those options leave room for doubt.
Following a 20-goal debut season, Pedro is firmly established as the club's first-choice striker and will arrive refreshed for the new campaign after being left out of Brazil's World Cup squad.
After spending last season on loan at Bayern Munich, where he scored 11 goals for the Bundesliga giants, Nicolas Jackson should be given the opportunity to impress Alonso during preseason. Despite concerns over his finishing, he contributed 30 goals across two seasons in west London before his loan departure.
Jackson's future at the club remains uncertain, however, and the same applies to Chelsea's other attacking options. Marc Guiu is expected to be sold or loaned out, Liam Delap's disappointing debut season may lead to an exit, and even new arrival Emmanuel Emegha, who recently joined from sister club Strasbourg, could be moved on before featuring in a competitive match for the Blues.

The addition of Welbeck would only create another obstacle for those players in their pursuit of first-team opportunities, potentially triggering a significant outflow of attackers. With no European football on the horizon next season, Chelsea certainly have no need for six centre forwards, which is the number they would reach by signing Welbeck.
Departures therefore appear inevitable, with only Pedro seemingly safe from the axe at this stage.
