LONDON — Bruno Guimarães has been held back by a groin problem, ruling him out of Arsenal's Premier League opener against Coventry City on Friday.
The £101 million signing from Newcastle United impressed in a stunning debut against Manchester City, showcasing a combination of elegance and tenacity that quickly won over supporters at his new club. Guimarães featured for just 45 minutes in the Community Shield, though his halftime exit had not initially sparked alarm given the pre-season nature of the match. As it turned out, Mikel Arteta had more than squad rotation in mind.
Concerns over his fitness emerged in the days leading up to Arsenal's Premier League curtain-raiser against Coventry at the Emirates. Arteta stopped short of clearing Guimarães to play but remained cautiously optimistic. "Let's see how he is," the Spanish head coach told reporters on Thursday. "He's progressing really well, but let's see for tomorrow."
As Arsenal supporters discovered in the hour before the evening kickoff, Guimarães had been left out of the matchday squad entirely.
Arteta confirmed the Brazil international was dealing with "a slight tension in his groin" following a disrupted summer after the World Cup. "He hasn't done a preseason, he only had four or five days before that [Manchester City] game," the Arsenal boss explained. "We have to take a lot of new stuff for him as well."
Arsenal Confirmed Lineup vs. Coventry
Starting XI (4-3-3): David Raya; Ben White, Cristhian Mosquera, Gabriel, Riccardo Calafiori; Martin Ødegaard, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Declan Rice; Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Christos Tzolis.
Substitutes: Kepa Arrizabalaga (GK), Piero Hincapié, Eberechi Eze, Viktor Gyökeres, Ethan Nwaneri, Mikel Merino, Martín Zubimendi, Max Dowman.
Without Guimarães available, Arteta turned to the same solution he used in the Community Shield: Declan Rice. Calling upon one of last season's Player of the Year contenders is far from a downgrade, yet the continued deployment of Myles Lewis-Skelly is a fascinating subplot in itself.
Martín Zubimendi appears to have settled into a backup role after a difficult end to last season. The World Cup winner had been a guaranteed starter for the first nine months of his Arsenal career, only for that consistent selection to ultimately work against him.
"At the end, he didn't play that much," Arteta acknowledged this week. "He still played some important minutes, but no-one can neglect what he did and how important he is for us." Evidently not important enough to earn a starting berth ahead of a teenager who had never started a senior midfield match before May.
When Will Bruno Guimaraes Be Back for Arsenal?

At this very early point, any projected return date for Guimarães must be treated with considerable caution. The Telegraph's Luke Edwards was among the first to suggest the 28-year-old could be out for "a few weeks," though nothing has been confirmed.
Arteta remained characteristically tight-lipped. "We need to take it bit by bit," was the extent of his pre-match comments.
There is a clear milestone on the horizon for the 2026–27 campaign, with Arsenal facing six matches before the first extended international break in September. Alongside their opening Champions League league phase fixture, the Gunners must navigate five Premier League games.
Following Friday's home clash with Coventry, Arteta's squad faces a demanding run of fixtures. A trip to Aston Villa is followed by a London derby against Xabi Alonso's Chelsea, before a tough away day at Sunderland. Régis Le Bris's team accumulated 33 points and conceded only 20 goals across 19 home league matches last season. Arsenal, along with Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United, all failed to take maximum points at the Stadium of Light last term.
