The Surprising Reason Barcelona and Real Madrid Are Sitting Out This Weekend

Just seven matches remain in the 2025–26 La Liga season, with fierce rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid once again dominating the title conversation — though the race will have to wait a little longer before it picks back up.

Barcelona hold a nine-point lead over Real Madrid at the top of the table after Los Blancos' disappointing draw with Girona allowed Barça to take full advantage in the Catalan derby against Espanyol the following day. It would take a remarkable turnaround for Álvaro Arbeloa's side to unseat the Blaugrana, who now boast their largest lead of the campaign.

With both Spanish powerhouses eliminated from the Champions League at the quarterfinal stage during the week, La Liga glory is the sole remaining prize either club is chasing, and it represents their only chance of lifting a major trophy come summer.

However, the title contenders will have to spend a few more days reflecting on their recent European exits without stepping onto the pitch, as for the first time since the winter break, La Liga action is being interrupted by something other than an international window.

Why Barcelona, Real Madrid Aren't Playing This Weekend?

Copa Del Rey

Barcelona and Real Madrid will be absent from action this weekend as La Liga has postponed Gameweek 32 to accommodate the 2025–26 Copa del Rey final between Atlético Madrid and Real Sociedad.

The showpiece of Spain's most storied cup competition will serve as the weekend's sole fixture, with no other top-flight matches on the schedule beyond the trophy clash between Diego Simeone and Pellegrino Matarazzo's hungry sides.

Barcelona and Real Madrid delivered a thrilling Copa del Rey final last season, but both clubs saw their cup runs cut short this time around. Los Blancos suffered a humiliating exit at the hands of second-division outfit Albacete in the round of 16, while Barcelona's title defense was ended in the semifinals by Atlético.

The unexpected break could prove valuable for both La Liga title hopefuls, giving them time to rest and recharge after a grueling stretch of fixtures. Still, it won't be long before they're back in action for the crucial final push of the season.

When Will Barcelona, Real Madrid Play Again

La Liga returns midweek and, interestingly, Gameweek 33 will be played ahead of the rescheduled Gameweek 32 fixtures, which are now set to take place the following weekend.

Real Madrid must secure all three points and keep the heat on Barcelona when they host relegation-threatened Deportivo Alavés on Tuesday night at the Bernabéu. Anything short of a victory could effectively end their La Liga title hopes.

Barcelona will look to extend their unbeaten home record at the renovated Camp Nou on Wednesday evening when they take on European hopefuls Celta Vigo. Dropping points could breathe new life into the title race and bring Los Blancos back into genuine contention.

What unfolds over the coming weeks could set the scene for a defining moment on May 10, when Barça and Madrid meet at the Camp Nou in the season's final Clásico — a match that may well determine who lifts the La Liga title.
