Three Stars Who Shone Brightest in Wrexham's Thrilling Preseason Showdown Against Man Utd

Wrexham claimed their first victory of the pre-season by beating Manchester United 1–0 in Helsinki, Finland on Saturday.

Sam Smith netted the match's only goal late in the opening half as Phil Parkinson's squad continued its pre-season preparations ahead of their upcoming U.S. tour, earning a well-deserved win against Premier League opposition.

The Red Dragons once again made sweeping changes at the interval, with 22 players getting minutes in Finland. Parkinson is set to gradually build up his players' fitness levels over the next few weeks as Wrexham edge closer to the start of the Championship campaign.

Aaron James

Wrexham made 10 substitutions at halftime against Manchester United, with James the sole player to remain on the pitch for the second period.

The 21-year-old began the game as an improvised wingback, where he helped contain the attacking threat of Patrick Dorgu and Luke Shaw before transitioning into his preferred center back position after the interval.

James demonstrated his adaptability throughout the contest, logging 70 minutes—the most of any player on either team. The academy product completed five passes in the final third, finished with an 85% passing accuracy, and recorded three progressive carries.

He also made his mark defensively, winning every challenge he entered while contributing one tackle, one interception, one clearance, and two recoveries.

James is anticipated to head out on loan this summer, but given his U-21 eligibility, he would not need to occupy a registered squad spot next season. Based on this display, there is a compelling argument for keeping him involved with the first team.

"We pushed him to 70 minutes; he has been out of action for a while," Parkinson said. "He did a solid job for the team in a slightly unfamiliar position."

Lewis O'Brien

O'Brien could prove to be one of Wrexham's key beneficiaries in midfield this summer as the club seeks to bring in more athleticism and dynamism through the center of the pitch.

The 27-year-old had an inconsistent campaign last season after being used in a variety of roles, but as the season progressed it became increasingly evident that he is at his best in a deeper midfield position.

That was precisely where he thrived alongside Matty James in Helsinki, putting in an energetic performance that showcased the full extent of his qualities. O'Brien drove forward to set up Smith's decisive goal and ended the match with an impressive 93% passing accuracy as Wrexham comfortably controlled possession against top-flight opposition.

The former Nottingham Forest midfielder also stood out defensively, winning every tackle he made and 60% of his duels while adding three recoveries and two clearances. It was yet another display that bolstered his claim for a key role in Wrexham's midfield next season.

Smith took another notable stride forward during his first Championship season and has developed a knack for delivering in high-profile matches. Saturday proved no different.

The 28-year-old was a constant thorn in the side of a Manchester United defense that included Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro, using his physicality, movement, and tireless work rate to trouble the Premier League pair.

He made an immediate impression by helping Wrexham win a corner within the opening minute before repeatedly stretching United's defensive line with clever runs. His persistence paid off just before the break when he found space at the back post to tap home a well-crafted team move from close range.

"He is always in the right place; that is what he does," Parkinson said. "He gave two quality center halves a really difficult 45 minutes with his runs in behind and his physicality. Strikers want to score, whether it is preseason or not, and he will be pleased with that, I am sure."

Even if Wrexham bring in another striker this summer, Smith has already proven himself as a reliable Championship forward. If he keeps performing at this level, he will give Parkinson every reason to believe he can make the step up should the club eventually reach the Premier League.
