The U.S. men's national team—eight-time Concacaf Gold Cup champions—is preparing to face a completely overhauled structure and format for the regional competition next year.
The Stars and Stripes can secure their spot directly in the biennial tournament by eliminating Haiti on aggregate in the upcoming two-leg series in the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals later this month. All four Nations League finalists receive automatic qualification to the Gold Cup next summer.
Having taken part in all 18 editions of the tournament since its founding in 1991, the USMNT boasts a rich history in the Concacaf Gold Cup, claiming titles in 1991, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2013, 2017 and 2021, while finishing as runners-up on six additional occasions. They rank as the second-most successful nation in the competition's history, trailing only Mexico, which holds 10 championships.
El Tri most recently claimed glory in 2025, edging the USMNT 2–1 in the final before a packed crowd of more than 70,000 spectators in Houston.
The Gold Cup is considered an important stepping stone toward the next World Cup, offering each competing nation the opportunity to evaluate their top talent on a competitive stage while vying for meaningful silverware.

The competition will still feature 16 teams—15 Concacaf member nations and one invited guest nation.
In previous editions, teams were split into four groups of four, with each side playing three group stage matches in round-robin fashion. In 2027, however, there will be just two groups of eight teams each. Every nation will now face four different group stage opponents from within their group.
The format change provides each team with an extra group stage fixture, while also raising the level of competition, as the tournament's strongest sides will no longer be spread across multiple smaller groups.
As in previous editions, eight teams in total will advance to the knockout rounds—now four from each group, rather than two. The quarterfinals, semifinals and final will all be single-elimination, consistent with prior years.
"We are genuinely thrilled about what this new format will bring to the tournament's group stage," Concacaf President Victor Montagliani said on Thursday. "Our fans want to see the region's top teams go head-to-head, and this format will create more opportunities for those matchups to take place earlier in the competition.
"At the same time, every game will carry weight, with teams facing a well-balanced mix of opponents while competing for a spot in the knockout rounds. We believe this will make for a more competitive and thrilling Gold Cup from the opening match all the way through to the final."
The 2027 Concacaf Gold Cup will get underway on June 17, with the final scheduled for July 11. The tournament draw is set for April 8, while host cities and venues will be revealed in the near future.
