Toni Kroos Takes a Sharp Dig at Real Madrid as Alvaro Arbeloa Makes a Bold, Drastic Move

Club icon Toni Kroos appeared to deliver a subtle message about teamwork and ego management to Real Madrid while reflecting on his own career during his recognition at the Laureus Awards on Monday evening.

The German midfielder, who spent ten years at Madrid between 2014 and 2024, was presented with the Laureus Inspiration Award in the Spanish capital in acknowledgment of his remarkable career.

Speaking at a press conference held at Cibeles Palace—the town hall building situated in front of the famous Cibeles fountain where Madrid traditionally celebrate their victories—Kroos chose not to address questions directly about his former club. Nevertheless, his responses regarding his own career still carried clear relevance to Los Blancos' ongoing struggles.

Kroos Says Putting Egos Aside Is the Key to Team Success

When asked about his values as a footballer, Kroos stated: "Within the team, I always tried to be a true team player. I understood clearly that achieving great things was only possible through collective effort.

"That doesn't mean having 11 or 25 close friends in the squad. I've never been part of a team where everyone was friends; that's simply unrealistic. But in the teams where I found success, we knew when it was time to come together, set egos aside, and channel individual quality for the greater good of the team. I believe that's the foundation of winning big things.

"These days, a person's word seems to carry less and less weight. I was always firm in my commitment to finish my career at Real Madrid. Many players have said the same, but I was determined to honor that promise—so people would know my word actually meant something. That quality feels somewhat rare nowadays."

Kroos's remarks come during a turbulent season for Real Madrid, in which the issue of unchecked player influence has once again become a major talking point. Amid persistent reports of dressing room discord, Xabi Alonso—who was dismissed as head coach in January—is alleged to have described the current squad as "impossible to coach."

Arbeloa Holds Crisis Meeting Ahead of Final Weeks

Álvaro Arbeloa

Meanwhile, The Athletic reports that Álvaro Arbeloa convened an "unplanned meeting" with his players on Sunday, "stressing the need for dedication and professionalism throughout the remainder of the season."

With seven matches remaining in La Liga, Madrid find themselves nine points behind league leaders Barcelona, meaning Los Blancos will likely need a near-flawless run—combined with results going their way elsewhere—to remain in title contention.

It is reported that Dani Carvajal—another player who has had a difficult time securing his role in the team this season—also addressed the group at the meeting. Both the coach and captain are said to have spoken about "the importance of unity beyond the conclusion of this difficult season for Madrid."

With a second consecutive season without a major trophy now appearing increasingly likely, a significant overhaul is anticipated at the Bernabéu this summer. Arbeloa is expected to be replaced as head coach, and substantial changes to both the squad and the club's internal structure are also on the horizon.

No Kroos Comeback

Luka Modrić, Toni Kroos

Madrid have sorely felt the absence of Kroos and his former midfield partner Luka Modrić this season, a point underscored by another Madrid great in Fabio Capello.

Also present at the awards ceremony, Capello echoed the widely held view that Madrid require a high-caliber central midfielder to return to their former glory. Kroos himself, however, has firmly ruled out any return to the game.

When questioned about the possibility of coming out of retirement, two years after hanging up his boots, Kroos maintained that his career had already concluded on the perfect note.

He said: "No, honestly, no. That thought never crossed my mind because I retired exactly the way I wanted to. I closed that chapter. If I ever considered going back—even though it's far too late—I always felt it was impossible to have ended things on a better note. Everything that followed would only be a step down.

"I now have new motivations and new projects in my life. That chapter ended beautifully for me, and I was able to walk away content, with no sense that anything could have been done differently. I was happy, and that's all there is to it."
