Trump Set to Take Center Stage at 2026 World Cup Trophy Ceremony

Trump Set to Take Center Stage at 2026 World Cup Trophy Ceremony

Having already handed the championship trophy to Chelsea at the 2025 Club World Cup, U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly set to play a similar role following the 2026 World Cup final on July 19, scheduled at the same location, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Per a report from TalkSport's Ben Jacobs, the U.S. President is anticipated to be part of the trophy presentation ceremony and may personally hand the trophy to the winning captain, much like he did last summer.

Last summer, Trump stayed at the front of the stage as Chelsea lifted the trophy, becoming a prominent figure in photos alongside the winning side before FIFA president Gianni Infantino guided him back to allow for players-only shots.

According to TalkSport, FIFA is amenable to Trump joining the team's trophy-lifting celebration if he chooses, or he may stand with the other officials and dignitaries on the nearby podium.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who hoisted the World Cup trophy while dressed in a full Canada men's national team kit as part of the official FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour, will also receive an invitation, along with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

All three leaders' administrations have faced scrutiny in the lead-up to and during this World Cup. Immigration tensions and the regional conflict between Iran and the U.S. have affected Iran's involvement, leading the team to shift its base camp to Mexico from Tucson, Arizona. A Somali referee was denied entry at the U.S. border, and in Canada, Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey was refused entry due to charges filed by the Metropolitan Police.

Political leaders participating in trophy presentations is not unusual. Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and French President Emmanuel Macron joined Infantino on stage in 2022, and Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared in 2018; however, being directly involved in the actual trophy lift remains rare.

Why Are Trump, Carney and Sheinbaum Absent From the Matches?

None of the three co-host nations' leaders have attended a World Cup match through the tournament's opening four days.

Trump skipped the USMNT's opening victory over Paraguay, with Andrew Giuliani, head of the U.S. World Cup Task Force, noting that "his scheduling is tight" while adding that "he's going to be engaged throughout this World Cup."

The 47th U.S. president marked his 80th birthday with a UFC event on the White House front lawn, yet still found time to attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs.

In Canada, Carney was absent from the opening match in Toronto against Bosnia and Herzegovina while participating in the G7 summit in France, but is expected to attend one of the final two Group B fixtures in Vancouver.

Mexico's Sheinbaum declined her complimentary ticket to El Tri's opening game at the Estadio Azteca against South Africa, opting instead to watch the match at a public viewing event in solidarity with fans who cannot afford the steep ticket prices for the 2026 tournament. She is passing her tickets along to young women who may not otherwise have the same opportunities.
