Welcome to Wrexham Season Five: Everything You Need to Know About What's Coming

Welcome to Wrexham Season Five debuts this week, introducing viewers to a host of new names and faces. For the fifth consecutive year, the FX docuseries chronicles the Welsh soccer club's extraordinary ascent under Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds.

Following an unprecedented hat-trick of back-to-back promotions, Wrexham now finds itself competing in the EFL Championship — English soccer's second tier — for the first time in 43 years. It marks the highest level the club has ever competed at, yet as viewers will soon discover, simply staying there is far from the goal.

Mac, Wrexham's co-chairman and the show's executive producer, has made it crystal clear that "consolidation" is not a word in his vocabulary. That relentless drive is what propelled the Red Dragons to the Championship, and it's immediately apparent that a fourth consecutive promotion — this time to the Premier League — is firmly in their sights.

What to Expect from Welcome to Wrexham Season Five

Phil Parkinson

The latest season of Welcome to Wrexham kicks off as the Welsh club embarks on its Championship adventure. Phil Parkinson remains the straight-talking manager who has engineered the club's stunning climb through the divisions, though much of the familiar supporting cast has since departed. "There are a lot of faces I don't recognize," Reynolds admits, speaking at the Racecourse Ground early in Season Five.

The breakneck pace of three successive promotions has seen Wrexham outgrow many fan favorites, as the higher division demands a higher standard of player. It's one of many costs of success laid bare throughout the series, alongside the growing transfer fees required to attract talent to the Racecourse Ground.

Viewers will say goodbye to some of the journey's most beloved figures while being introduced to new signings eager to carve out their own place in Wrexham history. While the sweeping changes — 13 players brought in last summer — are bittersweet, they inject a fresh energy into the show, offering an entirely new cast of characters to follow.

In the early episodes, viewers watch the North Wales club find its footing at the new level, with a string of difficult results raising questions about the team's readiness and whether Parkinson remains the right man in charge. As always, the on-pitch action is brilliantly edited, with stirring fan footage and powerful voiceovers that make for gripping viewing — regardless of whether you already know the outcome.

The opening episodes also spotlight the women's team as they chase their first Welsh league championship. While they don't receive full dedicated episodes as in prior seasons, their own remarkable rise has been central to the club's story, and they look set to play an even bigger role when Season Six arrives next year.

Telling a Story Beyond the Pitch

Welcome to Wrexham continues to set the benchmark for sports documentaries — and arguably all documentaries. A major reason for this is its ability to look far beyond the sport itself and, despite having high-profile names involved, shine a light on everyday people within the local community.

That tradition continues in Season Five from the very first episode. We're introduced to the family of Bailey Jones, a Wrexham supporter who passed away in 2023 at just 20 years old following a brain bleed. His organs were donated, and a year on, the man who received his heart — Matthew — meets Bailey's family. It's once again a masterclass in emotional storytelling, handled with grace and sensitivity. Episode Two carries that spirit forward with a heartfelt tribute to Wrexham's greatest-ever player, Joey Jones, who passed away in July 2025.

While Mac and Reynolds were the central draw in the documentary's first season, they have gradually stepped aside, allowing Wrexham and its community to emerge as the true heart of the show. That is the defining ingredient that has set Welcome to Wrexham apart from those who attempted to replicate its success as a vanity exercise. Like any great sports documentary, you don't need to be a sports fan to fall in love with it.

It comes as little surprise, then, that Welcome to Wrexham has already been renewed for three additional seasons — even before Season Five has aired. The Red Dragons have become a globally recognized name in soccer, and all signs point to the story only growing larger.
