What's Next for Arne Slot After Boldly Rejecting a Fortune-Filled Offer?

Former Liverpool manager Arne Slot is reportedly not interested in taking charge of Saudi Pro League club Al Ahli, turning down what would have been a lucrative opportunity.

Slot has been without a job since Liverpool parted ways with him in May following a disappointing second season in the dugout. The manager has kept a low profile in the months since, but his name was thrust back into the spotlight after Eddie Howe resigned from his position at Newcastle United.

The Magpies are set to appoint Matthias Jaissle as Howe's successor, leaving Al Ahli searching for a new head coach. Slot was linked with the soon-to-be vacant role, but ESPN reports the 47-year-old has no intention of heading to Saudi Arabia.

Al Ahli would undoubtedly have presented Slot with a generous package, but the club is far from an appealing destination for a manager who guided Liverpool to the Premier League title just two seasons ago.

According to ESPN, Slot is "prioritizing" a return to club management within one of Europe's elite leagues. He has received approaches from clubs in England, Germany and Italy this summer, yet remains without a club.

Slot's name was also floated as a possible successor to Ronald Koeman at the helm of the Netherlands. Koeman stepped down as national team manager following the Oranje's last-32 elimination at the 2026 World Cup.

Slot could have embarked on a new chapter in international management, following in the footsteps of Carlo Ancelotti, Zinedine Zidane and Mauricio Pochettino, but all indications suggest the Dutchman is focused on rebuilding his reputation at club level.

After making a strong impression during his tenure at Feyenoord, Slot secured a three-year deal with Liverpool. Stepping into the shoes of the legendary Jürgen Klopp appeared a near-impossible challenge, yet the 47-year-old delivered Premier League glory in his very first season at Anfield.

The Reds followed their 20th league championship with a staggering summer outlay, spending close to £450 million ($606.7 million) to bring the likes of Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitiké to Merseyside. Despite this, they ended the season without silverware, finishing fifth in the table and scraping into the Champions League.

Liverpool stood by Slot throughout the campaign, even amid a very public falling out between the manager and club legend Mohamed Salah. However, once the season concluded, they ultimately dismissed the Dutchman and brought in Andoni Iraola as his replacement.

In most other off-seasons, Slot would likely have been snapped up by a top English club, but Manchester City had already secured Enzo Maresca, while Chelsea moved for Xabi Alonso. Michael Carrick, meanwhile, cemented his permanent role at Manchester United, just as Roberto De Zerbi did at Tottenham Hotspur.

Across Europe, Real Madrid handed the reins to José Mourinho, while Ruben Amorim took the helm at AC Milan.

Slot may now be forced to bide his time until a major club requires a new manager mid-season. Given how quickly Europe's top clubs cycle through managers, however, he could well have a new contract in place by January.
