Which Rising USMNT Talent Will Explode onto the World Stage at the 2026 World Cup?

Which Rising USMNT Talent Will Explode onto the World Stage at the 2026 World Cup?

The competition to claim the starting forward spot for the U.S. men's national team dominated much of the 2025–26 European club season. Now, it seems that New York City-born Folarin Balogun is poised to lead the United States at the 2026 World Cup, where he'll look to cement his status as a recognizable name in the sport.

Heading into the tournament, attacking midfielder Christian Pulisic remains the standout figure for the United States, with even casual sports fans familiar with the man sometimes called "Captain America" and the "LeBron James of Soccer."

Yet despite several U.S. players, including Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams, achieving notable success in Europe, none have managed to leave a lasting impression in the sport's biggest competitions in a way that resonates with the general public.

This summer, that challenge falls to Balogun. As the primary striker, he has the opportunity to etch his name into American sporting history if he can deliver crucial goals throughout the group stage and deep into the World Cup knockout rounds. While Pulisic can certainly dazzle, Balogun stands as the player with the greatest breakout potential.

Why Could Fans Love Balogun?

Put simply, the man finds the back of the net.

Fueled by his relentless work rate and exceptional pace, Balogun tallied 19 goals and five assists in 43 appearances across all competitions this season with AS Monaco, including 13 in Ligue 1, the premier tier of French football, five in the UEFA Champions League, and one in the Coupe de France.

A significant portion came toward the close of the 2025–26 campaign, highlighted by a spring run in which he netted 11 goals in 11 matches across all competitions and put together an impressive eight-game Ligue 1 scoring streak.

The 24-year-old consistently places himself in goal-scoring positions, timing his runs in behind the defensive line before accelerating away once the ball is played through.

With the USMNT, he has nine goals in 27 international appearances and found the net in the 3–2 friendly victory over Senegal, the second-to-last match before the World Cup. He has also shown a knack for scoring against Group D opposition, having netted in a 2–1 friendly win over Paraguay back in November.

Who Could Battle for the Spotlight?

Matt Freese

American sports fans have a deep appreciation for goal scorers. If Balogun fails to deliver that clinical edge in the opener against Paraguay or as the competition advances, the responsibility will likely shift to someone else—most probably PSV Eindhoven's Ricardo Pepi, the backup striker on the squad.

Pepi battled through a broken arm and additional injuries in the Dutch Eredivisie, a step below France's top flight, this season, yet still wrapped up the year with 19 goals and two assists in 34 appearances. He also turned heads with a creative, back-to-goal link-up play involving Pulisic in the Senegal match, which set up a goal from Sergiño Dest. Given his abilities, he could win over American fans if handed the chance.

Beyond the outright strikers, both goalkeepers Matt Turner and Matt Freese could also craft their own legendary narratives if either manages to replicate Tim Howard's record-setting heroics from the 2014 World Cup at any point in the competition.

With Hollywood and Los Angeles providing the backdrop for the opening fixture and the group stage finale, the setting is ideal for a potential breakout star this summer—one with the chance to join Pulisic, Landon Donovan, and a select few others as true household names across the United States.
