Who Will Steal the Show? The Hottest Candidates for 2026–27 Premier League Signing of the Season

As we get ready to kick off the 2026–27 Premier League season, there are still plenty of unanswered questions.

Can anyone dethrone Erling Haaland as Golden Boot champion? Who will emerge as the surprise star of the upcoming campaign? Those are just two of the many questions on our minds, and we're also eager to identify which player will claim the title of best new arrival.

Last season saw the introduction of an official Transfer of the Season award, which was claimed by Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens. Who will be joining the Belgian in the history books come next summer?

Big-Money Risks

Elliot Anderson

It's tempting to focus on the headline names when thinking about potential standout signings. After all, they're the ones that should deliver the greatest impact, which is precisely why they commanded such enormous price tags.

Chelsea made Morgan Rogers the most expensive English player ever ($157 million), narrowly surpassing the record set by Manchester City's purchase of Elliot Anderson ($153 million) just weeks prior, while Tottenham Hotspur's ambitious bid to oversee the biggest transfer window in the club's history was anchored by the arrivals of midfield pair Mateus Fernandes ($112 million) and Sandro Tonali ($133 million).

The issue with these high-cost moves is that they seldom deliver genuine value. Expectations are sky-high, and anything less than perfection invites intense scrutiny.

Looking at the 10 most expensive transfers in history, the ratio of successes to disappointments is concerning. The verdict is still out on Rogers and Anderson, and Alexander Isak is being given the benefit of the doubt following an injury-disrupted first season at Liverpool, but the list also includes Philippe Coutinho and Antoine Griezmann at Barcelona, João Félix at Atlético Madrid, Enzo Fernández at Chelsea, and even Neymar at Paris Saint-Germain. They were all decent. Nothing more, nothing less. Sadly, that simply doesn't cut it at these price levels.

The one undeniable success story in the top 10 is Kylian Mbappé's transfer to PSG. That's the standard players must reach—genuine world-class territory—to justify the weight of such fees.

Of course, any of Rogers, Anderson, Fernandes, or Tonali could put together outstanding seasons. They are all gifted players, that much is undeniable. The real question is whether their contributions will stand out above others across the league, and history suggests that is rarely the outcome.

Affordable Fees

Christos Tzolis

It was among the more modest deals that last year's winner was discovered. Lammens was far from United's most glamorous signing, with the club paying roughly $29 million for a deal that would have gone largely unnoticed at most other clubs in the division.

Even the heightened attention that comes with the United name couldn't pile unbearable pressure on Lammens. He recorded eight clean sheets in 32 appearances—a stat that rarely makes front-page news—but fulfilled his role to near perfection. At such a reasonable cost, it quickly became impossible to argue that Lammens represented anything other than outstanding value for money.

It would therefore come as little surprise if the 2026–27 Transfer of the Season award went to someone in a similar price range.

United are hoping to replicate last season's smart business with the acquisition of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for $47 million. The Belgian is a widely respected talent with extensive top-level Premier League experience, yet will end up as the least expensive of the club's three midfield additions once Carlos Baleba joins Andrey Santos in the squad. With less pressure on his shoulders, the conditions for success are far more favorable.

Chelsea will be hoping that Serie A Defender of the Year Marco Palestra can replicate that form in England following a $62 million move from Atalanta, while Brighton & Hove Albion's Luka Vušković ($66 million) is tipped to hit the ground running in the Premier League.

Wingers Christos Tzolis and Víctor Muñoz (both $46 million), representing Arsenal and Liverpool respectively, arrived for modest fees that could quickly prove to be bargains. Playing for top clubs tends to make winning this award more attainable, given the global exposure and positive attention those teams naturally generate.

Low-Profile Deals

Mamadou Sangaré

The spotlight that comes with playing for a big club is both an advantage and a burden, and those who make the most significant impressions are often players many supporters didn't even notice had joined the Premier League.

Brentford's capture of midfielder Mamadou Sangaré—a member of last season's Ligue 1 Team of the Year—for $52 million has the potential to turn heads if he lives up to comparisons with the likes of N'Golo Kanté and Moisés Caicedo.

Likewise, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest both raided the upper echelons of Portugal's top flight to secure quality defenders in António Silva ($34 million) and Ousmane Diomande ($46 million). Don't be surprised to see both players generating nine-figure transfer speculation by next summer.

Everton's Hayden Hackney ($33 million) could be the next Championship standout to successfully make the step up to the Premier League, while Álvaro Arbeloa's legacy at Fulham may well hinge on the performances of striker Gonzalo García ($48 million), who followed him from Real Madrid.

Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki will be stepping into the shoes of Emiliano Martínez at Aston Villa after completing a move worth approximately $40 million—a fee that, while not insignificant, still gives the Japan international the opportunity to surpass expectations.

It is transfers at these kinds of fees, and the reduced pressure they carry, that allow players to truly flourish. Should Rogers or Anderson deliver superstar-caliber campaigns, the best signing debate will be settled instantly, but a host of under-the-radar arrivals will be ready to seize the moment if either falls short of their lofty billing.
