Wrexham Caught in High-Stakes Battle to Keep Prized Young Star

Wrexham are preparing for a wave of summer transfer interest in Harry Ashfield from multiple clubs.

The 20-year-old central midfielder has been on the periphery of Phil Parkinson's senior squad and had a fruitful loan stint with League Two outfit Cheltenham Town in the latter half of the campaign.

Ashfield has accumulated nine first-team appearances for the Red Dragons, three of which came during the 2025–26 season. He made his Championship bow as a substitute against Blackburn Rovers on New Year's Day, having previously featured in the opening two rounds of the Carabao Cup back in August 2025.

The Welsh youth international subsequently headed to Cheltenham on a temporary basis, netting twice and registering one assist across 17 outings. His displays caught the eye of several clubs, and he is widely anticipated to generate considerable transfer interest this summer as teams weigh up the prospect of signing him permanently.

A source has informed Sports Illustrated that League One pair Peterborough United and Barnsley have both reached out about a potential deal. Wrexham would ideally like to hold onto Ashfield for another year but are open to entertaining any compelling offers for his services.

A season-long loan arrangement also remains on the table, with the Red Dragons eager to see how Ashfield would perform over a full season with regular first-team football in the tier below. Parkinson is hesitant to approve a permanent exit for a talented youngster who still has the capacity to contribute meaningfully at senior level.

What Role Could Ashfield Play Next Season?

Harry Ashfield celebrates scoring his team's second goal during the Carabao Cup Second Round match vs. Preston.

Ashfield is expected to be involved during the early stages of Wrexham's preseason programme at minimum before a final call is made on his future.

Despite impressing during his loan at Cheltenham, the attacking midfielder finds himself low in the pecking order at the Racecourse Ground and is unlikely to command a significant role next season. That makes some form of departure a probable outcome, though it remains unclear whether that will take the form of another loan or a permanent switch.

One notable factor in Wrexham's deliberations is that, given his age, Ashfield qualifies as a U21 player for the 2026–27 Championship season and would not need to occupy a spot in the club's 25-man squad. This effectively grants him additional first-team availability throughout the year, lending weight to the case for retaining him.

Nevertheless, a move away still looks the most probable scenario. Ashfield has clear potential but requires consistent game time to keep progressing. He also faces stiff competition in attacking midfield, with Josh Windass, Nathan Broadhead, Ollie Rathbone, Lewis O'Brien and Davis Keillor-Dunn all vying for positions in the Wrexham starting lineup.
