Wrexham Makes Bold, Rare Move to Fuel Their Premier League Ambitions

Wrexham Makes Bold, Rare Move to Fuel Their Premier League Ambitions

Wrexham players convened an emergency squad meeting before their final four Championship fixtures as they fought to keep their Premier League aspirations alive.

The Red Dragons surpassed all expectations during their first second-division campaign in over four decades, staying firmly in contention for a playoff spot throughout the closing stages of the season.

After a difficult adjustment period in the Championship, Wrexham found their rhythm and demonstrated they were more than capable of competing in what many consider the most fiercely contested league in world football.

The Welsh club's extraordinary journey has been documented in the critically celebrated FX series Welcome to Wrexham, which has collected 10 Emmy Awards and two Critics Choice Television Awards.

That journey continues in Season Five, which follows the men's first team competing at the highest level in the club's storied history, while the women's side chases a landmark first Welsh league championship.

FX's WELCOME TO WREXHAM —

In Episode 7, the second-to-last installment of Season Five, titled "Touching Grass," audiences are granted an inside look at the final weeks of Wrexham's bid to secure a Championship playoff place.

The episode opens with an impressive away win against Sheffield United that breathed new life into the Red Dragons' promotion ambitions. Those hopes are swiftly dampened, however, when Wrexham suffers a humbling 5–1 home thrashing at the hands of high-flying Southampton.

In the wake of the heavy defeat, viewers are offered a rare look inside the dressing room and the heartbreak felt by the squad following such a stark reality check.

Despite the difficult result, manager Phil Parkinson and talismanic forward Josh Windass refuse to abandon their belief.

"They're a good team. They're a good team," Parkinson says gravely during his post-match address. "We know they've got good players, but we've got to be harder to score against than that.

"It's too f****** easy for them. Too easy. This game is not going to f****** define us. We're going to come out f****** ready for Birmingham on Sunday and go again. The whole team, the whole team, has got to be harder to play against than that."

While fans are well acquainted with Parkinson's direct style, many may be taken aback by the influential leadership role Windass assumes away from the spotlight.

Once the manager concludes his address, Windass steps up to break the silence.

"Can I just say, I know everyone in here knows and believes we can get into the playoffs. So we don't let a game like that stop that belief. We keep going, and we get into the f****** playoffs."

Wrexham, however, were unable to respond in the way Parkinson had envisioned. In their following fixture, they were comfortably beaten 2–0 by Birmingham City in a flat performance in which they failed to muster a single shot on target.

Once again, Parkinson is shown rallying his downcast players, urging them to stay focused for the final four games of the campaign as they looked to keep their improbable playoff push on track and close a four-point deficit to Hull City.

After briefly outlining the stakes of the run-in, the episode delivers an unexpected revelation: Wrexham's players organised their own emergency meeting in a bid to arrest their dip in form.

"The players had a meeting today. Just the players," Nathan Broadhead explains. "When you get beat 5–1 and then lose at Birmingham, I don't think we had a shot at goal. So we talked about how we need to keep spirits high when everything is low."

Windass later addresses the camera directly, disclosing that he and experienced midfielder Matty James were the key figures behind the initiative.

"Obviously, now we are outside the playoffs and trying to get that sixth spot. To be honest, we were all gutted after the losses. It is very uncommon to have a meeting with only players, but Matty and I felt we had to do anything to turn things around.

"Every single one of us still believes we can make the playoffs. This is our chance, and we have to fight for it."

Welcome to Wrexham viewers will only need to wait one more week to find out how the story ends, with the Season Five finale scheduled to air on June 25, 2026.
