Wrexham's World Cup Warriors: Every Player, Every Fixture, Every Shot at Glory in 2026

Wrexham's World Cup Warriors: Every Player, Every Fixture, Every Shot at Glory in 2026

Wrexham will make history at the 2026 World Cup this summer.

The Red Dragons have historically had just one active player represent the club on football's grandest stage, but two first-team stars will be part of this year's global showpiece.

Wrexham were still competing in the National League during the previous World Cup, making it a remarkable testament to their extraordinary rise that they will have players participating in the largest World Cup ever held.

The club's two representatives will compete for different nations, and Wrexham came close to having five players involved had Wales not been eliminated by Bosnia and Herzegovina in the qualifying playoffs.

Here's a detailed look at every Wrexham player set to appear at the 2026 World Cup.

Scotland

Dom Hyam

Wrexham captain Dom Hyam was an unexpected inclusion in Scotland's squad for the 2026 World Cup. The 30-year-old had an impressive debut season in North Wales following his transfer from Blackburn Rovers, despite having made only three prior appearances at international level.

The seasoned center back earned his first Scotland cap back in 2023 and then waited nearly three years for his second appearance, which came against Côte d'Ivoire in March. His most recent outing was a 4–1 friendly win over World Cup newcomers Curaçao last weekend.

Wrexham boasts a strong tradition of Scottish players, including former forward Steven Fletcher. Current striker Ryan Hardie, along with National League fan favorites James Jones and Callum McFadzean, also represented Scotland at the U21 level.

Scotland has never progressed past the group stage of a major international tournament despite being one of the oldest national teams in the world. This summer, they will be aiming to finally change that record.

New Zealand

Liberato Cacace

Wrexham defender Liberato Cacace was a straightforward pick for New Zealand's World Cup squad after the All Whites clinched their spot at the 2026 tournament.

The 25-year-old managed just 13 appearances across all competitions during a difficult debut season in North Wales, with injuries heavily restricting his contributions. Cacace acknowledged that adapting to the Championship felt "relentless" after previously playing in the more measured environment of Serie A with Empoli.

New Zealand enters the competition as the lowest-ranked side in the field and will be hoping to cause an upset in only their third World Cup appearance. The All Whites famously remained the only unbeaten team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, drawing all three group-stage games before being knocked out.

Cacace has accumulated 36 senior international caps throughout his career and started New Zealand's 4–0 loss to Haiti on Tuesday evening.

Wrexham's World Cup History

Dennis Lawrence battles Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the ball.

Wrexham have had just one active player represent the club at a World Cup, when Dennis Lawrence featured for Trinidad and Tobago at the 2006 tournament in Germany. The only other Wrexham player to appear at a major international tournament while at the club was Jacob Mendy, who represented The Gambia at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Lawrence played a crucial role in helping Trinidad and Tobago qualify for the World Cup, netting the decisive goal in a 2–1 win over Bahrain in the intercontinental playoff. He went on to start all three of his nation's group-stage fixtures at the tournament.

Trinidad and Tobago began their campaign with a memorable goalless draw against Sweden before falling to defeats against England and Paraguay, finishing at the bottom of Group B.

The well-regarded center back departed Wrexham shortly after the World Cup, moving to Swansea City, who were playing at a higher level at the time.

Lawrence remains a cherished figure in North Wales thanks to his five-year stint at the Racecourse Ground. In 2019, he was even offered the Wrexham managerial role but turned it down to continue his work as head coach of Trinidad and Tobago.
