Amorim's Bold 2026–27 Plan Could Force Man Utd Into Another Costly Decision

Amorim's Bold 2026–27 Plan Could Force Man Utd Into Another Costly Decision

Former Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is in no hurry to return to management following his departure from Old Trafford in January, according to a new report.

Just five days into 2026, Amorim was dismissed as United's manager, having secured only 25 wins from 63 matches across all competitions. The club paid approximately $13.5 million (£10 million) in compensation to end the contracts of Amorim and his coaching staff, with United recently acknowledging that the total could increase further.

One of the conditions that could see Amorim receive additional funds from United is if he delays his return to the touchline within a specific timeframe. According to A BOLA, that scenario appears increasingly probable.

Amorim is reportedly planning to sit out the entire 2026–27 season—a sabbatical that could entitle him to further compensation from United, with whom he was under contract through the end of that campaign.

That said, Amorim has no intention of spending the season doing nothing. Rather, he plans to use the time for personal and professional development, seeking conversations with several individuals he considers mentors, eager to exchange ideas and reflect on what went wrong during his spell at Old Trafford.

It is emphasized that a sufficiently attractive offer could draw Amorim back into management, but he is not thought to be actively welcoming any approaches at this stage.

Ruben Amorim

Recent club financial records revealed that United had set aside a maximum of £15.9 million in compensation for Amorim and his backroom team, with a final settlement yet to be agreed upon. The exact conditions required for Amorim to receive the full amount remain unclear, though a prolonged absence from management is believed to increase his potential earnings from the club.

Whatever the final figure turns out to be, Amorim's time at United will long be remembered as an expensive miscalculation—one the club continues to bear the financial consequences of today.

When United appointed Amorim in November 2024, they paid Sporting CP a total of £11 million in compensation. This followed the £10.4 million handed to predecessor Erik ten Hag when his contract was terminated just weeks prior.

Amorim was generously compensated throughout his time at United and was reportedly among the highest-paid managers in the Premier League. He is said to have earned approximately £7.8 million in wages during his short stint at Old Trafford.

Combining all figures, the total cost of the Amorim era amounts to £34.7 million ($46.9 million), not including the fee paid to end Ten Hag's contract.

This means United spent roughly £550,000 per match during the Amorim era—a staggering outlay for the manager who posted the lowest win percentage at the club since Sir Alex Ferguson's exit.

Michael Carrick

It is abundantly clear that the cycle of costly compensation packages for managerial appointments and dismissals is entirely unsustainable.

The mounting costs have strained United's finances and are likely to shape their pursuit of a permanent replacement for Amorim, with the Red Devils cautious about committing to yet another substantial payout for their next manager.

Consequently, United may direct their attention toward managers who will be available on a free this summer. Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola have both confirmed they will be leaving their respective clubs and are believed to be on United's radar.

Current interim boss Michael Carrick also has that factor working in his favor. United would face no additional cost to appoint the former midfielder on a permanent basis, making him an appealing candidate given how impressively he has performed since stepping in for Amorim back in January.
