Barcelona Icon Shatters Records with Groundbreaking La Liga Triumph

Barcelona's consecutive La Liga title wins came with an added piece of soccer folklore, as João Cancelo became the first player ever to win all four of Europe's top leagues.

Cancelo made his return to Catalonia for a second stint with the Blaugrana in January, having stepped away from European football to pursue the financial rewards of Saudi Arabia. The adaptable fullback signed with Al Hilal in 2024, but failed to add any silverware to his impressive collection in the Middle East before Barça brought him back.

Despite his time away from the top level of the game, Cancelo has looked completely at home at Barcelona in the second half of the campaign. The technically gifted defender is comfortable on either side, though he has been deployed predominantly on the left flank.

On Sunday evening, Cancelo made his 13th La Liga outing of the season and his ninth start as Barcelona sealed the championship with a 2–0 victory over Real Madrid in El Clásico.

How João Cancelo Made History

Cancelo has rubbed shoulders with European football's elite for nearly a decade, navigating a series of high-profile loan moves alongside major permanent transfers.

He is currently nearing the end of his second temporary stint at Barcelona, having also spent the 2023–24 season with the Blaugrana. Barça were unable to defend the La Liga title that year and subsequently parted ways with head coach Xavi Hernández, paving the way for Hansi Flick's arrival.

Now, Cancelo has etched his name into a unique corner of soccer history. Numerous stars have claimed titles in three of Europe's top five divisions — among them Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, and Eden Hazard — but no player had ever previously conquered the continent's four biggest leagues.

Cancelo, who lifted the Primeira Liga with Benfica before his move to Valencia, helped Juventus extend their stranglehold on Serie A in 2018–19 before embarking on a hugely productive spell at Manchester City.

The versatile technician ultimately fell out of favor with Pep Guardiola, yet still managed to win three straight Premier League titles. Loaned out for the second half of City's treble-winning 2022–23 season, he seized the opportunity to add a Bundesliga medal to his collection with Bayern Munich.

Barcelona's astute January recruitment gave the fullback the platform to make history, with his achievement only previously matched by Carlo Ancelotti — as a manager.

João Cancelo's Barcelona Future Still Unclear

While AS report that Cancelo is keen to stay in Catalonia, Barcelona remain constrained financially and are expected to direct most of their summer spending toward strengthening other areas of the squad.

That said, there is no overlooking the contribution Cancelo has made to Flick's side, and the German coach would welcome a deal being struck with Al Hilal for a permanent arrangement.

The 31-year-old has just one year left on his contract in Saudi Arabia.

"Anything can happen in soccer. I'm going to keep working, and I know what I want for next season," Cancelo said last month. "There are always options. I have a contract with Al Hilal and I'm on loan at Barça, but there are always options. Soccer can change in an instant."
