The 145th FA Cup final is almost here, with Chelsea set to take on Manchester City in the 2026 showpiece at Wembley Stadium.
For Chelsea, it represents a chance to rescue something from a thoroughly disappointing season. For Manchester City, it's an opportunity to claim their second major honour of the campaign following the Carabao Cup, while keeping domestic treble ambitions alive.
The Cityzens will undoubtedly enter as favourites at what has become something of a second home, despite falling short in FA Cup finals in both 2024 and 2025. That said, Chelsea possess the individual quality to upset the odds, with a single moment of brilliance often proving the difference in this competition.
With that in mind, here are four individual matchups that could decide the outcome of Saturday's encounter.
Reece James vs. Jérémy Doku
Few attackers are in more electrifying form right now than Jérémy Doku. City's dynamic winger has been outstanding in recent weeks, contributing meaningfully in each of the last four fixtures, including during last month's tense FA Cup semifinal against Southampton. The Belgian's blistering pace is almost impossible to contain, and his increasingly clinical output makes him a genuine danger.
Yet if any fullback is best placed to handle Doku, it's Reece James. The Chelsea skipper returned from injury during the weekend draw with Liverpool, though only as a substitute, and it appears likely that Calum McFarlane will deploy the right back against Doku.
Match sharpness could be a concern for James, who has featured for just 27 minutes since the March international break, though the 26-year-old typically finds his rhythm quickly after time on the sidelines. His physical condition will be put to the test at Wembley, particularly with Nico O'Reilly offering City additional attacking threat from left back.
James has the pace to keep up with Doku and the strength to reduce the winger's effectiveness. It's a duel that could prove pivotal in the capital.
Levi Colwill vs. Erling Haaland
Another recent returnee for Chelsea is Levi Colwill, who made his much-anticipated comeback from an ACL injury at half-time of the heavy defeat to Nottingham Forest. The centre-back then played the full 90 minutes of the draw at Anfield, immediately bringing composure and assurance to a leaky backline — even if he faced a depleted and toothless Liverpool attack.
Saturday will present an entirely different challenge, however, with Erling Haaland standing in his way. While the Norwegian has a well-documented record of underperforming in finals for City, he arrives at the weekend having netted seven goals in his last seven appearances across all competitions. The imposing striker always demands close attention.
Colwill has conceded goals to Haaland in each of their last two meetings and will need to be at his very best to keep him quiet this time around. In Wesley Fofana, he has an unconvincing partner whom Haaland may look to exploit, meaning Colwill will also need to cover for any defensive lapses from the Frenchman.
Moisés Caicedo vs. Rayan Cherki
Rayan Cherki turned heads with a dazzling display in the Carabao Cup final win over Arsenal, most notably a cheeky piece of skill that highlighted the attacking midfielder's fearlessness on the big occasion. An early withdrawal against Brentford last weekend and a substitute appearance against Crystal Palace in midweek should leave him well-rested for another Wembley outing.
Cherki has firmly established himself in the No.10 role, seeing off competition from Phil Foden and Tijjani Reijnders. The France international's creativity drives some breathtaking performances, with his exceptional technical quality and clean striking making him a threat in every sense. When firing on all cylinders, Cherki is one of the most exciting players to watch.
Tasked with neutralising that threat at Wembley is Moisés Caicedo, whose dip in form has compounded Chelsea's struggles. Dominant at the start of the season, the midfielder has found things harder in the post-Enzo Maresca era, and a demanding battle with Cherki will be a real test of his quality. If Chelsea are to lift the trophy, Caicedo must keep City's creative hub under wraps.
João Pedro vs. Marc Guéhi
A solid defensive structure will be Chelsea's primary concern at Wembley, but they are equally aware of the importance of exploiting their counter-attacking threat. Clinical finishing will be crucial, given that Chelsea are unlikely to enjoy a wealth of clear-cut chances. Fortunately, their standout performer in an otherwise bleak campaign will be leading the attack.
João Pedro has had a superb debut season at Stamford Bridge, amassing 20 goals across all competitions since first catching the eye at the Club World Cup last summer. Having built a reputation as both a sharp finisher and an intelligent link-up player, the Brazilian has frequently been Chelsea's only reliable source of attacking inspiration in recent months.
City will go a long way to winning the game if they can keep Pedro quiet on Saturday, with a centre-back pairing of Abdoukodir Khusanov and former Chelsea man Marc Guéhi potentially lining up. The latter will pose the greater challenge for Pedro, with Guéhi having made a transformative impact since joining Pep Guardiola's side mid-season. But the 24-year-old has already made light work of numerous top defenders this campaign.
