Chelsea Smash Staggering Spending Milestone as Maxence Lacroix Deal Reportedly Sealed

Chelsea's summer expenditure is on course to exceed €300 million ($341.7 million) if the reported transfer of Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace is completed.

The French centre-back caught Chelsea's attention during the World Cup as the club looked to shore up a defence that had been vulnerable throughout the 2025–26 season. Interest intensified following the tournament and a resolution now appears imminent.

Following talks at ownership level, Chelsea have reached an agreement with Palace to acquire Lacroix for a fee in the region of £52 million ($69.3 million), according to The Athletic. The Eagles had reportedly been seeking £60 million, but will still pocket a healthy profit on a player they purchased from Wolfsburg for just £18 million two years ago.

Lacroix represents Chelsea's seventh signing of an already hectic transfer window. While moves for Geovany Quenda, Emmanuel Emegha and Dastan Satpaev had been announced ahead of formal completion this summer, Lacroix joins Marco Palestra and Morgan Rogers as part of Chelsea's costly overhaul under new head coach Xabi Alonso.

However, this is far from the first time the Blues have splashed out heavily in recent memory.

How Chelsea Can Afford Constant Spending

Chelsea built a well-known reputation for lavish spending under Roman Abramovich, but the broader inflation of the transfer market alongside BlueCo's ambition to "disrupt" it have seen numerous records broken. This will mark the fourth occasion in five summers that Chelsea have crossed the €300 million threshold.

At a time when financial regulations have resulted in points deductions for several Premier League clubs, Chelsea have avoided any sporting sanctions despite outspending every other side in the division — largely due to a consistently active player exit strategy.

Since BlueCo's chaotic first summer in charge at Chelsea — when transfer decisions were driven by Thomas Tuchel, a manager dismissed within a week of the window shutting, and co-owner Todd Boehly — the west London club have spent approximately $2.2 billion, the highest figure of any club worldwide. Over that same period, however, Chelsea have generated over $1.2 billion through player sales, also a world-leading total.

The accounting mechanism of amortisation enables a club to distribute a player's transfer fee across the duration of their contract (up to five years), while a sale is recorded at its full value in the year it occurs. Therefore, Lacroix's $69.3 million fee spread across his proposed deal equates to under $13.9 million (69.3 divided by 5) per year in the accounts, whereas the sale of Andrey Santos to Manchester United registers as a full $64.1 million in a single year. In effect, two deals of roughly equal value actually represent around $50 million of net income (64.1 minus 13.9) in Chelsea's financial records.

The drawback of this model is the ongoing need to keep selling players. Lacroix may only cost $13.9 million in the 2026–27 accounts, but that same charge will recur in 2027–28, 2028–29 and through to 2030–31. Santos's fee, by contrast, is fully accounted for and closed after this summer.
