Chelsea's Stunning $86 Million Rejection: What It Reveals About Their Ambitious Blueprint for Alex Scott

Having shattered their transfer record to acquire forward Morgan Rogers, Chelsea are said to have made an unsuccessful bid of $86 million (£64 million) for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott—a sign that Xabi Alonso's squad rebuild is far from complete.

The Blues splashed out $157 million (£117 million) to secure the England international from Aston Villa, continuing a frantic summer that has already brought in Marco Palestra, Emmanuel Emegha, Geovany Quenda and young left back Denner.

BBC Sport and several other sources report that Chelsea are keen to make Scott their next signing. An $86 million approach has been firmly turned down by Bournemouth, who have made clear their intention to retain the 22-year-old beyond this transfer window.

Bournemouth do face some leverage concerns, however, as Scott is believed to have declined the opportunity to extend his deal, which has just two years remaining. The Cherries have acknowledged this situation but maintained their position regardless.

Chelsea are not the only club chasing Scott, who has attracted attention from most of the Premier League's top sides. Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United have all registered interest, as did Tottenham Hotspur prior to their costly signings of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali.

What Does Scott Interest Mean for Enzo Fernández?

Chelsea already boast arguably the most high-profile expensive midfield duo in world football. On the surface, any new addition would appear to serve as backup for Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández.

Fernández has, however, made known his wish to depart. While Chelsea are open to a sale, club officials insist they would be equally content to retain the World Cup finalist if their valuation of $160 million (£120 million) is not matched.

The prospect of such a fee materializing has diminished following Real Madrid's public announcement that they have no plans to sign him. A return under former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has been mooted, as has a move to Atlético Madrid, but neither club is expected to meet Chelsea's price tag.

With Fernández's departure far from guaranteed, Chelsea's interest in another midfielder appears entirely separate, with Scott potentially viewed as meaningful competition for a midfield pairing that has lacked sufficient depth in recent campaigns.

Roméo Lavia and Dário Essugo's well-documented injury problems have frequently left Chelsea thin in the middle, where Brazil international Andrey Santos was often the sole backup before his departure to Man Utd earlier this summer.

To attract a player of Scott's quality, Chelsea would need to offer him a more prominent role than Santos was given last season, implying Alonso does not view Fernández and Caicedo as an untouchable partnership. The Ecuador international is undoubtedly a guaranteed starter, but Fernández may find himself under greater scrutiny.

It is worth noting that Fernández, Caicedo and Scott could function as a midfield three if Fernández is deployed further forward in an attacking role, though Chelsea are already well-stocked in that department with Rogers and Cole Palmer.

What Other Deals to Chelsea Need This Summer?

Left back remains a position of concern for Chelsea following the sale of Spain international Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid earlier this summer. Palestra can operate on the left, as can the promising Jorrel Hato, but the Blues have been seeking a natural option in that role.

Pep Chavarría of Rayo Vallecano is believed to be Alonso's primary target, though the Spanish club's steep financial demands have proven extremely challenging and may represent an insurmountable hurdle.

Additionally, a new centre back is understood to be on the agenda. It has recently come to light that former Man City defender John Stones, now a free agent following the expiry of his contract, is on Chelsea's radar, though much may hinge on departures first.

Offloading players remains a key priority for Chelsea. Cucurella, Santos and Tyrique George have all departed on permanent deals, and if Chelsea get their way, several more will follow them out of the club.

Goalkeeper Filip Jörgensen, centre backs Axel Disasi and Benoît Badiashile and winger Alejandro Garnacho are all actively being made available—Aston Villa are in talks over the latter—while Fernández is among those who could be sold for the right figure.

Trevoh Chalobah could head to Serie A, with Como in discussions over a deal, and while Chelsea are not forcing anyone out, the likes of Malo Gusto, Pedro Neto, Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha and Marc Guiu could all move on if appropriate offers are received.
