Manchester United's desire to bring in a striker this summer is reportedly not sufficient for the club to consider disrupting Danny Welbeck's anticipated move to Chelsea.
Welbeck, who turns 36 in November, has been targeted by Chelsea alongside Jordan Henderson as a player who can bring experience and leadership to a youthful, developing squad.
The Brighton & Hove Albion forward has enjoyed a remarkable resurgence in recent seasons, netting 13 Premier League goals in 2025–26 to make it the most productive campaign of his career, surpassing his previous best of 10 league goals just 12 months prior in 2024–25.
Chelsea are in the preliminary stages of securing a deal for Welbeck, who would return to London following an injury-hampered five-year stint at Arsenal that concluded in 2019. There is reported "optimism" at Stamford Bridge.
In direct response to news breaking about Chelsea's interest in Welbeck, outspoken former United defender Rio Ferdinand posted on X: "Welbs … ignore [and] come back home! Champions League football next season in Manchester."
Man Utd 'Not Interested' in Welbeck Hijack
Manchester United had previously explored re-signing Welbeck on more than one occasion. According to The Athletic, the Red Devils progressed "quite far in the process" last summer following a similar inquiry in 2024. On this occasion, however, there is "no indication" of any renewed pursuit.
This is despite the club scanning the market for a striker to "share the load" with Benjamin Šeško.
Šeško had an encouraging debut campaign at United, registering 11 Premier League goals in 30 appearances. The Slovenian netted nine of those in a stretch of just 14 matches during the second half of the season. It is also worth noting that he missed fixtures in November and December due to a knee issue before a shin injury cut his season short by a few weeks. Šeško has been undertaking individual training this summer to build his physical condition.
The 23-year-old is the only natural No. 9 in United's senior squad. That said, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha both operated in that role last season; Cunha also established himself as Brazil's first-choice striker at the World Cup during the group stage, contributing three goals.
Marcus Rashford is another option who could serve as a backup or supporting No. 9, depending on whether he remains at United when the transfer window closes on Sept. 1.
The Athletic further notes that, based on those three players, senior management could reasonably conclude that adequate cover already exists. Whether that view shifts if Rashford departs remains uncertain. For now, the expectation is that the homegrown forward, who spent the past 18 months on loan at Barcelona, will be reintegrated unless a transfer is agreed.
Man Utd Striker Pursuit Likely to Come Late in Window
Recruiting a new striker may also be a matter of addressing higher-priority positions first and revisiting the issue if time and funds allow. The squad still requires a third central midfielder, as well as a left back and a left winger — the latter potentially influenced by Rashford's situation.
Should United actively enter the market for a striker, the profile would likely resemble Welbeck — perhaps slightly younger — to fulfill a very specific role. At 23 and with significant investment behind him, Šeško is the long-term starter with the ceiling to become a top-level goalscorer. Any new arrival would ideally help develop him while also providing competition and cover.
A busier 2026–27 schedule, with Champions League football returning and domestic cup runs unlikely to be as brief, should ensure sufficient playing time for multiple forwards. Ultimately, this will not be United chasing a marquee striker in the mould of Harry Kane.
That is why Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta has previously been linked — a player with a proven Premier League record and enough quality to earn a place in France's World Cup squad. Notably, Dušan Vlahović, aged 26, remains a free agent following his departure from Juventus.
If Aston Villa were open to cashing in on 30-year-old Ollie Watkins before his market value begins to decline significantly, the England international could emerge as another viable candidate. Meanwhile, Ivan Toney may only be a realistic option if he were prepared to sacrifice the substantial wages he currently earns in Saudi Arabia.
Given the greater emphasis placed on other positions, any striker move may ultimately come down to opportunism toward the end of the transfer window, depending on available options.
