Don't Be Fooled: The Truth Behind Bruno Fernandes's Man Utd Contract Standoff

Among the most significant concerns at Manchester United is the contract situation of club captain Bruno Fernandes, who has reportedly been in negotiations over a new deal for more than three months without any resolution.

Fernandes claimed the FWA Footballer of the Year, Premier League Player of the Season, and PFA Players' Player of the Year honors in 2025–26, yet he has now entered the final year of his existing contract.

The Red Devils retain an option to extend his deal through the end of next season, which would ease immediate concerns about the Portugal international leaving on a free transfer when the current campaign concludes — though his long-term future beyond the next 21 months remains uncertain.

Fernandes continues to be the standout performer at Old Trafford. He was the dominant figure on the pitch during United's victories over Ipswich Town and Sabah, registered the most touches of any player in the opening loss to Hull City, and has created chances in every fixture so far, regardless of the final result.

United supporters were given cause for concern when The Athletic journalist and transfer expert David Ornstein used the word "impasse" during an appearance on Sky Sports. "We understand that Bruno Fernandes continues to be in talks with United over a new contract, but there is no breakthrough," he stated.

'It's Not Off, It's Not Collapsing'

Fabrizio Romano addressed the situation with a notably more positive outlook.

"It's not off, it's not collapsing, it's not over," he said in a video posted to his self-titled YouTube channel, noting that talks began in the window between last season's conclusion and the 2026 World Cup and have continued on a monthly basis since.

Romano indicated there are "several points still to clarify," including salary and contract length, at what is a potentially delicate stage of Fernandes's career. Having recently turned 32, it is difficult to overlook the fact that, despite being the Premier League's finest player over the past year, he is moving into the latter phase of his career. There are no certainties either way — Liverpool failed to get full value from Mohamed Salah's 2025 extension, yet Barcelona appeared justified in handing Robert Lewandowski a four-year contract when he was approaching 34.

Fernandes, a consummate professional who rarely misses time through injury, would undoubtedly believe he can remain fit and effective at Premier League and Champions League level well into his late thirties. The fact that he could be considered a late developer — playing 35 or fewer matches per season for clubs outside European competition until the age of 23 — also works in his favor. There is still plenty left in the tank.

From his standpoint, becoming the club's highest earner would seem entirely justified given his contributions, not only over the past year but since joining Old Trafford in 2020. That would require the club to agree to an annual salary exceeding Marcus Rashford's reported $22.8 million (£16.9 million). Speculation to date suggests this may not be a major obstacle, as it would represent a relatively modest increase.

Romano also notes that negotiations must address whether a release clause will be included in any new deal, along with the specific terms governing such a clause. Under his current contract, a bid of £57 million ($77 million) can trigger a move if the player consents.

Fernandes is believed to have already rejected advances this past summer from unnamed clubs in western Europe, as well as widely reported interest from Turkish champions Galatasaray and continued overtures from Saudi Arabia.

As long as his wish is to stay at Manchester United and the club is equally keen to retain him — which appears to be the case on both sides — the path to an agreement should be more straightforward.
