FIFA president Gianni Infantino has been summoned to testify before the House Judiciary Committee to disclose the full nature of his ties with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Infantino and Trump are widely recognized as having a close relationship, though the U.S. President's sway over FIFA has sparked considerable controversy over time.
Trump received the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize from Infantino, who also secured office space in Trump Tower in New York City and subsequently relocated the World Cup draw to Washington's John F. Kennedy Center, a venue that had similarly come under the control of Trump's administration.
Concerns escalated further during this summer's World Cup when Trump contacted Infantino in an effort to overturn the suspension imposed on USMNT forward Folarin Balogun—a request that was ultimately fulfilled and prompted a formal complaint from the Norwegian Football Federation, which has been outspoken in its criticism of Infantino's behavior.
Rep. Jamie Raskin, a leading figure within the Democratic Party, has since written to Infantino requesting a formal hearing before the House Judiciary Committee regarding the nature of his relationship with President Trump, including documentation of the pair's interactions beyond the football world.
"The latest quid pro quo orchestrated by FIFA and President Trump is far from a victimless act," Raskin wrote. "It is causing real harm to Americans.
"FIFA has interpreted its privileged standing within the Trump Administration as license to exploit consumers, most notably through illegal price gouging and deceptive sales practices surrounding the World Cup."
FIFA Accused of 'Outright Bribery'
Raskin's letter is especially cutting in its comparison of Infantino's dealings with President Trump to the corruption allegations that brought down Infantino's predecessor, Sepp Blatter.
Claims of "outright bribery" are leveled at FIFA, with Raskin further asserting that Americans have been "defrauded and manipulated" by FIFA through the inflated costs associated with the World Cup, which remain under investigation by New Jersey attorney general Jennifer Davenport.
Raskin's letter acts as formal notice for Infantino to provide evidence regarding the true scope of his relationship with Trump, including a demand that all communications "between FIFA personnel and individuals affiliated with the Trump Administration or its inaugural committee" be preserved.
Infantino is additionally called upon to participate in a recorded interview to account for his relationship with President Trump.
What Does This Actually Mean for Infantino, President Trump?
Given that the Democrats hold a minority position in the House, Raskin is unlikely to possess the authority to compel any action from Infantino, FIFA, or President Trump in the near term. However, attention will turn to November's midterm elections and whether Democrats can secure additional seats. Raskin would require a majority vote to pursue any legal measures against Infantino.
The bidding process for hosting rights to the 2031 Women's World Cup is also expected to face heightened scrutiny. The tournament is anticipated to be jointly hosted by the U.S., Mexico, Costa Rica, and Jamaica.
White House Bites Back at Letter
When approached for comment on the letter by The Athletic, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle responded without restraint.
"Lightweight Jamie Raskin [is] a stupid person's idea of a smart person," Ingle said in a statement. "No other president in history could have pulled off the historic feat that President Trump delivered for the American people and the world.
