Liverpool Crumble Against Chelsea: Alarming Display Exposes Glaring Weakness

Liverpool were forced to wait to confirm their spot in next season's Champions League after letting a first-half lead slip in a 1–1 draw with Chelsea at Anfield.

The Reds entered the match knowing that just four points would be enough to seal Champions League qualification, and they got off to a dream start when Ryan Gravenberch unleashed a spectacular strike from outside the area in the sixth minute. However, a lethargic spell later in the half proved costly, as Enzo Fernández's wide free kick somehow curled around Liverpool's defense and crept in off the post.

Cole Palmer's disallowed goal shortly after the restart was a clear warning for the hosts, who were also denied by the offside flag when a header from Curtis Jones was chalked off. Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk both rattled the woodwork as Liverpool pushed for a winner, but they ultimately failed to find the decisive goal.

The draw nudges Liverpool closer to a top-five finish that would guarantee Champions League football next term—they sit fourth and seven points clear of sixth-placed Bournemouth. Nevertheless, it represents yet another missed opportunity for the reigning Premier League champions.

The Problem That Won't Go Away

Cody Gakpo

Injuries have been a persistent thorn in Liverpool's side throughout the season, and those concerns have resurfaced in recent weeks. Four of Liverpool's nine substitutes against Chelsea were teenagers, and eight first-team regulars were absent from the squad altogether. Most notably, the attacking unit had been severely depleted.

Alexander Isak returned to the bench after sitting out last weekend's defeat to Manchester United, but Mohamed Salah, Hugo Ekitiké and Florian Wirtz were all unavailable for the Chelsea clash. Even while finding the net in recent weeks—the Reds have scored nine goals across their last four league outings—Arne Slot's side have struggled to produce quality in the final third. A combined xG of just 5.06 during that stretch says it all, with Liverpool outperforming their expected goals figure in every game.

A front three of Jeremie Frimpong, Cody Gakpo and former Chelsea academy player Rio Ngumoha did little to excite the Anfield crowd on Saturday, and their concerns proved well-founded during another flat attacking performance. Aside from Ngumoha, who injected some welcome energy, Liverpool rarely created anything of note.

Liverpool's disinterested midfield and shaky defensive line also warrant criticism, but an injury-hit attack was unable to relieve the pressure. Gravenberch's strike was the only Liverpool shot on target in the first half, with an xG of just 0.31 at the break highlighting their creative struggles. The Reds also managed just four touches inside the Chelsea box—a quarter of the total recorded by the visitors.

Although Liverpool's intensity picked up as the second half progressed, moments of genuine quality in the attacking third remained scarce. Set pieces and long-range attempts offered their best openings, with the final product consistently lacking when operating in and around the penalty box.

With key forwards on the sidelines, Liverpool's thin attacking options were ruthlessly exposed. Reinforcements must be brought in during the summer transfer window.

Liverpool Player Ratings vs. Chelsea (4-2-3-1)

Rio Ngumoha, Cole Palmer

*Ratings provided by FotMob*

GK: Giorgi Mamardashvili—6.8: Produced several key saves on his return to the starting lineup, though his kicking continues to be a persistent concern.

RB: Curtis Jones—6.9: Despite a string of solid recent outings at right back, Jones looked every bit a central midfielder here. The 25-year-old's defensive awareness was lacking as he repeatedly failed to pick up Marc Cucurella's overlapping runs.

CB: Ibrahima Konaté—6.7: Some woeful positional errors gave Chelsea encouragement, with Konaté once again struggling to hold his own under pressure. A complete breakdown in communication with Jones allowed Chelsea to exploit Liverpool's right side at will.

CB: Virgil van Dijk—7.2: Marking his 40th consecutive start for Liverpool across all competitions, Van Dijk again delivered a shaky display when the backline came under sustained pressure.

LB: Milos Kerkez—6.8: Characteristically aggressive with frequent overlapping runs down the left, while Chelsea's most dangerous attacking moments came on the other side.

CM: Ryan Gravenberch—8.1: Powerfully dispatched the opener with a precise long-range finish and showed some tidy touches despite Liverpool being too exposed in the middle of the park.

CM: Alexis Mac Allister—6.1: Far too easily bypassed in the center of the pitch, as another below-par showing left Liverpool vulnerable to quick attacking combinations through the middle.

RW: Jeremie Frimpong—5.9: Contributed nothing in the attacking third, with moves regularly breaking down at his feet. He was equally ineffective when called upon defensively.

AM: Dominik Szoboszlai—7.1: A subdued first-half showing gave way to greater drive and output after the interval. He tested Filip Jörgensen's palms and crashed the post with two of Liverpool's best efforts.

LW: Rio Ngumoha—7.6: Comfortably Liverpool's most dangerous attacker, showing no hesitation in duels with Malo Gusto. He set up Gravenberch's goal and was frequently the only source of creative spark going forward.

ST: Cody Gakpo—6.5: Simply not suited to the center-forward role. Starved of service and needlessly caught offside when setting up Jones's disallowed goal. Gakpo will be relieved when the season draws to a close.

SUB: Alexander Isak (67' for Ngumoha)—6.2: Barely featured after coming on as a substitute.

SUB: Joe Gomez (77' for Konaté)—6.0

SUB: Federico Chiesa (77' for Gakpo)—5.8

Subs not used: Freddie Woodman (GK), Andy Robertson, Mor Talla Ndiaye, Trey Nyoni, Will Wright, Kieran Morrison.
