Liverpool Explode With Rage After Referees Deny Alexander Isak Penalty Claim

Newcastle manager Andoni Iraola was left furious after his team's penalty claims were dismissed midway through the opening half, as forward Alexander Isak had his shirt grabbed by Jurriën Timber during Sunday's 1–0 loss to Arsenal.

Shortly after Kai Havertz had slotted his team into a 16th-minute advantage, Isak's bid to level the score was visibly hindered by a shirt tug from Arsenal's Timber, with replays showing his frantic attempts to prevent the Sweden international from rising to meet a header.

The tactic worked, as Isak's jump fell well short of the ball. No foul was awarded, and a VAR check of the moment did not trigger a review, prompting Iraola to suggest that Isak had been penalized simply for staying on his feet.

"The Alex Isak one is a clear penalty," Iraola told Sky Sports angrily. "You hold the t-shirt; we can all see that he holds the t-shirt. The ball just goes one centimeter in front of Alex. Alex is going to hit the ball in front of the goal."

When asked whether Isak should have gone down to win the spot kick, Iraola continued: "The fact that you are even asking me that he should have gone to the floor, that's the thing. If he goes to the floor, they call the penalty for me. They call the penalty 100%."

Why Were Liverpool Not Awarded a Penalty?

When referee Andy Madley chose not to stop play, supporters worldwide waited for the seemingly unavoidable announcement that he would be directed to the pitchside monitor for a review, with VAR widely expected to flag an error.

When that moment never came, serious questions began to emerge.

To date, the Premier League has yet to issue any statement explaining why the incident went unpunished. While Madley can perhaps be excused for failing to spot Timber's shirt pull in real time, VAR's decision not to step in left many wondering about the purpose of the system — including Virgil van Dijk.

"I think it was a clear penalty," the Dutch centre-back said. "I've seen it back and I've seen it being given. Today it wasn't meant to be."
