Man City Cling On for Dear Life Against Brighton, Edging Through in Penalty Shootout

Backup goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli stopped two Brighton & Hove Albion spot kicks to advance Carabao Cup holders Manchester City into the competition's quarterfinals after the match ended 2–2 at full time.

It came as little shock that a clash between the Premier League's top two scoring sides produced goals at both ends, even though Erling Haaland wasn't troubling Jason Steele's net on the evening.

Both Enzo Maresca and Fabian Hürzeler made sweeping midweek rotations ahead of their Premier League meeting on the same ground just three days later, seemingly reluctant to reveal their tactical intentions.

Nevertheless, a lively end-to-end affair unfolded, with Man City required to fight back twice. Brighton's man-marking press caused problems in patches, and a high turnover gifted the visitors their opener, finished by Malick Yalcouyé at close range.

Mateo Kovačić's long-range effort quickly leveled things up, but City were caught off guard at the start of the second half by Georginio Rütter and were fortunate to equalize a second time. Vitor Reis deflected Rayan Cherki's free-kick cruelly past Steele to set up a tense finish, but with no late breakthrough, the tie proceeded to a shootout.

And while Steele denied Kovačić from the spot, Rulli made consecutive saves from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk to book City's place in the last eight.

If tactical terminology isn't your strong suit and the term 'half-space' means nothing to you, simply picture the vertical inside channels. The phrase gained traction in Germany, and that particular zone proved especially significant in Wednesday's contest.

Modern coaches encourage their players to exploit this space as frequently as possible. In principle, this area avoids the congestion of the central zone while remaining close enough to goal for advancing attackers to cause real damage, whether as a creator or a finisher.

Jürgen Klopp once remarked it's "really not easy to defend that position," meaning teams must make a deliberate effort to protect this corridor, pushing managers to find creative ways to organize their defensive shape and keep these zones covered.

Yet Fabian Hürzeler didn't need any tactical masterplan to unlock City's reshuffled defense and access these spaces. It served as a primary route of attack throughout the night. Rotations played a part, as did stretching the pitch from side to side. There were moments when City's defensive line failed to shift across properly, or their midfielders and wingers lost track of runners coming from deep.

Brighton's first two goals both stemmed from half-space runs that went unchallenged until it was too late. It will be a key area for Maresca to address ahead of Saturday's return fixture.

Man City Player Ratings vs. Brighton (4-2-3-1)

Rico Lewis

*Ratings provided by FotMob*

GK: Gerónimo Rulli—7.4: He did concede twice, but Rulli produced a superb stop to deny Rütter at 2–1 and keep City alive in the tie. Ultimately emerged as the match-winner.

RB: Rico Lewis—6.6: Lewis showed intelligent movement in the build-up phase as an effective man-marker beater for City in the early stages, though he departed in the second half without having built on his strong Champions League display the previous week.

CB: Vitor Reis—7.7: Credited with the second goal, even if he had little idea about it. Reis looks assured, composed in possession and a commanding physical presence.

CB: Marc Guéhi—6.9: At the very least, City's captain on the night avoided any significant errors.

LB: Nico O'Reilly—7.0: Yet to rediscover his best form this season, and this was more of the same from O'Reilly. He appears noticeably less effective in possession, despite showing some neat footwork to escape tight situations on a couple of occasions.

CM: Ayyoub Bouaddi—6.9: It wasn't the most polished 45 minutes from Bouaddi, despite a few commanding driving runs. He was substituted at the break after picking up a yellow card.

CM: Mateo Kovačić—7.9: Kovačić showed his class and helped the hosts bypass Brighton's intense press on occasion, also netting his first goal for the club since April 2025 with a precise long-range finish.

RW: Phil Foden—7.9: Mainly stationed on the right but capable of interchanging and cutting inside. Some of Foden's link-up play was beautifully sharp, and it was his surging run that created City's second goal.

AM: Rayan Cherki—8.2: Constantly sought to be the game's central figure. The outcome was a mixed one. He produced moments that drew admiration... and others that prompted frustration.

LW: Allan—7.0: The summer signing struggled to make his mark on the game. His pressing and work rate off the ball, however, were beyond reproach.

ST: Floyd Samba—6.1: The young striker saw little of the ball in the first half, though he physically appears capable of handling this level.

SUB: Ryan McAidoo (46' for Samba)—6.3: Brighton looked to take advantage of the youngster's defensive lapses in transition.

SUB: Rayan Aït-Nouri (46' for Bouaddi)—6.5: The Algerian had 45 minutes to stake his claim to Maresca, but failed to make a convincing impression.

SUB: Jérémy Doku (61' for Allan)—7.2: The usual game-changer was largely kept quiet but sparked into action deep into the match.

SUB: Abdukodir Khusanov (76' for Lewis)—6.2: At fault for a careless defensive moment that conceded a corner. His recovery speed helped neutralize one Brighton attack.

SUB: Enzo Fernández (87' for O'Reilly)—N/A

Subs not used: Marcus Bettinelli (GK), Iliman Ndiaye, Kaden Braithwaite, Dexter Oliver.
