Man Utd Demolish Sabah in Stunning Champions League Triumph That Shakes European Football

Manchester United marked their Champions League return in style with a commanding 4–0 win over newcomers Sabah on Thursday night.

Michael Carrick's side faced expectations to hit the ground running in their league phase opener against a club that only came into existence in 2017. It took until the 27th minute for the Red Devils to break the deadlock at Old Trafford, but once Matheus Cunha slotted home the first goal, United never looked back.

Bruno Fernandes converted a superb move initiated by Youri Tielemans to double the lead in the 42nd minute, before Benjamin Šeško beat Sabah keeper Stas Pokatilov to make it 3–0 just three minutes after that.

The second half lacked intensity, but United still managed to add a fourth through Lisandro Martínez, who capitalised on a disorganised Sabah backline to score his first goal of the campaign and put the result beyond any doubt.

Following a somewhat disappointing start to the season, Thursday's emphatic Champions League performance was precisely the shot in the arm the Red Devils needed ahead of their home clash with Manchester City on Sunday.

One Thing We Can't Ignore

Carrick was navigating a tricky situation on Thursday. The boss needed to field a side capable of securing three points in United's eagerly anticipated Champions League return, while simultaneously preparing for a Manchester derby just three days later.

Most of Carrick's rotation came in the defensive line, with Noussair Mazraoui, Leny Yoro and Patrick Dorgu all handed starts at the back. He also opted to keep Marcus Rashford on the bench, bringing Benjamin Šeško into the attack instead.

By the interval, Šeško had found the net, Dorgu had contributed an assist, and United's reshuffled defence had barely been tested. It was an ideal outcome for Carrick — he managed to rest three of his four first-choice defenders while helping his striker sharpen his match sharpness and self-belief. He also got a useful look at Dorgu at left back against relatively modest opposition.

What made the evening even more satisfying was that Carrick was able to withdraw the likes of Tielemans, Kobbie Mainoo and Šeško before the 65th minute, giving key players extra recovery time ahead of Sunday's derby. It may not sound significant, but with City having played their league phase opener on Tuesday, United need every advantage they can find in terms of rest.

LB: Patrick Dorgu—8.4: Produced a stunning first-time cross to tee up Cunha. Bounced back well after being berated by Martínez for a defensive lapse. Used his electric pace to cause havoc in Sabah's backline.

CM: Youri Tielemans—7.9: Demonstrated his defensive awareness with a brave challenge inside his own penalty area. Then showed his creative side with a clever assist, going to ground to play Fernandes in behind him.

CM: Kobbie Mainoo—7.6: A complete performance. Dictated the rhythm of the game, showcased his precise passing range and even threaded a stunning ball over the top to release a surging Fernandes in the first half.

RW: Bryan Mbeumo—8.2: Pounced on a loose Sabah pass to spark the move that led to the opening goal. Added an assist later in the first half with a perfectly weighted ball into Šeško's run.

AM: Bruno Fernandes—8.7: Continuously found space as the match progressed, exploiting pockets between the lines. A goal always looked likely, and he duly delivered. Unsurprisingly led all players in chances created on the night.

LW: Matheus Cunha—8.2: Visibly relieved to get his name on the scoresheet with the opening goal. Fortunate to escape a yellow card after a reckless high challenge late in the game.

ST: Benjamin Šeško—7.7: Waited patiently for his opportunity and took it brilliantly, rounding the goalkeeper to notch his second goal of the season. Looked primed to lead the attack against City.
