Mexico Unveils Their 2026 World Cup Squad: Star-Studded Lineup Features Historic Selections

Javier Aguirre put an end to weeks of uncertainty by unveiling Mexico's 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Despite being nearly a month into El Tri's World Cup preparations, Aguirre held off on finalizing his squad until fewer than two weeks remained before Mexico's tournament opener.

The football-mad nation will become the first in history to host three separate World Cups this summer. Anticipation and optimism are growing as the tournament approaches, and it will be up to Aguirre and his 26 selected players to deliver on the grandest stage of all.

Mexico will open its World Cup campaign in the tournament's first match against South Africa, followed by clashes with South Korea and Czechia. It was a kind draw for El Tri, and the advantage of playing all three group games on home soil has made winning Group A a realistic and critically important goal.

Twelve members of Aguirre's squad suffered a painful group stage elimination at Qatar 2022. These seasoned veterans bring invaluable experience to a group of young and dynamic talents who have significantly raised El Tri's overall quality.

Here are the 26 players tasked with guiding Mexico toward a historic showing on home soil at the 2026 World Cup.

Historic Inclusions and Controversial Calls Define Mexico's Roster

Guillermo Ochoa

"The [World Cup] roster always stirs up debate," Aguirre said recently. "Because some players will be left out while others will be missed. There has never been a squad that's been universally praised, and this one will certainly be no different."

World Cup icon Guillermo Ochoa will join Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi this summer as the only players in history to feature in six different World Cups. The 40-year-old will etch his name in the record books at the final international tournament of his storied career.

Gilberto Mora, a player 23 years Ochoa's junior, is one of Mexico's brightest hopes this summer. The 17-year-old prodigy is set to play a key role for El Tri and will become the youngest player in Mexican history to appear at a World Cup, surpassing a record held by Manuel Rosas from the very first edition of the tournament in 1930.

Notable absentees include Marcel Ruiz and Carlos Rodríguez, widely regarded as the two best midfielders in Liga MX over the past year or more. Ruiz has continued playing for Toluca despite a partial ACL tear in his right knee, but Aguirre has chosen to play it safe and leave the gifted midfielder at home.

The call-up.

Rodríguez, meanwhile, was the standout performer driving Cruz Azul's Liga MX title triumph in May, yet his outstanding club form wasn't enough to overcome Aguirre's reservations about his international displays, and he was ultimately excluded.

Aguirre appeared to place excessive emphasis on Europe-based players. Rather than selecting Rodríguez, Ruiz, or one of Liga MX's most dangerous wingers in Diego Lainez, he went with Luis Chávez and César Huerta, who have combined for just 12 appearances since October due to injury.

Former USMNT prospects Obed Vargas and Brian Gutiérrez will make their World Cup debuts representing El Tri.
