For the first time in ten years, the Manchester derby will take place without Pep Guardiola on the touchline, with the iconic manager having departed Manchester City at the end of the previous campaign.
Stepping into his shoes is Enzo Maresca, his former City deputy and one-time Chelsea manager, who has made an impressive, unbeaten beginning to his tenure in the Premier League as the club's new head coach.
Across the dugout at Old Trafford on Sunday, Maresca will encounter a recognizable opponent in Michael Carrick, a manager he has faced previously—though not in the Premier League, and not while Carrick has been at the helm of Manchester United.
Here's a look at how each of the two managers' previous encounters has unfolded.
Middlesbrough 1–0 Leicester City (Nov. 11, 2023)
It was Carrick who emerged victorious when the two coaches first crossed paths back in November 2023 in the English Championship.
Facing off at Boro's Riverside Stadium in the second division, a single goal from Sam Greenwood in the 83rd minute proved sufficient to secure all three points for Carrick's team.
It was no ordinary goal, either. It was a stunning, curling free kick from distance that nestled into the top corner and was subsequently voted the club's Goal of the Season by supporters.
The remainder of the match, however, was far less elegant than Greenwood's strike. It was a thoroughly scrappy contest, featuring seven yellow cards and a whopping 33 fouls.
Leicester City 1–2 Middlesbrough (Feb. 17, 2024)
In the reverse fixture later that season at the King Power Stadium, it was once again Middlesbrough and Carrick who prevailed, this time claiming a 2–1 victory.
First-half strikes from Finn Azaz and Sam Silvera gave Boro a 2–0 advantage at the interval, which they maintained until the 85th minute, when Jamie Vardy pulled one back to set up a nervy finale.
Boro held firm, however, with the three points lifting Carrick's side to 11th in the standings. Despite the loss, Maresca's team stayed at the summit of the table—a position they would go on to hold through to the end of the season, when they clinched the title and secured promotion to the Premier League.
