With the 2026 FIFA World Cup now less than two weeks away, Portugal kicks off its tournament preparations by facing Chile in Lisbon this Saturday.
While several countries have already made early trips to North America, the Iberians won't cross the Atlantic until just under a week before their opening group match against DR Congo. Portugal also hosts Nigeria in the Portuguese capital on Wednesday.
Roberto Martínez's squad cruised through World Cup qualification and have a genuine shot at lifting the trophy for the first time this summer. European champions nine years ago, Portugal most recently added silverware with the 2024–25 UEFA Nations League title, defeating pre-tournament favorites Spain in a penalty shootout.
The depth of talent on display, especially through the middle of the park, should allow Portugal to dominate games in what promises to be a physically taxing environment. Saturday's friendly won't reveal too much, however, given Chile's fall from South American powerhouse to the bottom of the standings.
The two-time Copa América champions in 2015 and 2016 failed to make the World Cup after finishing last in the CONMEBOL qualifying table. Their most recent appearance at the tournament was in 2014, when host nation Brazil knocked them out in the round of 16.

Portugal's Prep Starts on Winning Note

This will mark the fourth encounter between these two sides and the first since 2017. Chile won on penalties to advance to the Confederations Cup final eight years ago, but that was during a period when the South Americans were a genuine force in world football.
Chile were ranked fourth in the FIFA world rankings at that time. They now sit 54th following a dismal World Cup qualifying campaign.
Portugal currently sit fifth, and while Martínez will be missing a handful of key players on Saturday, the Iberians should have little trouble easing into the summer tournament.
Score Prediction: Portugal 3–0 Chile
Portugal Predicted Lineup vs. Chile

With the World Cup fast approaching and only one warm-up fixture remaining, Roberto Martínez is expected to name a near full-strength side against Chile.
However, his Paris Saint-Germain players will be unavailable, as their season only concluded last Saturday. Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and João Neves have all been named in Martínez's squad.
Mallorca's Samú Costa could slot into the midfield, while João Cancelo, following a strong end to the campaign with Barcelona, is expected to fill in for Mendes at left back.
Cristiano Ronaldo finally tasted club success with Al Nassr and is gearing up for his sixth World Cup appearance. Despite a disappointing record at recent major tournaments, this Portugal side continues to be built around its all-time leading scorer.
Portugal predicted lineup vs. Chile (4-2-3-1): D. Costa; Dalot, Dias, Inácio, Cancelo; R. Neves, S. Costa; Silva, Fernandes, Leão; Ronaldo.
Chile Predicted Lineup vs. Portugal

The golden era of Chilean football has passed, with Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sánchez no longer featuring for the national side.
Chile's current generation of players are largely unfamiliar names, particularly to European fans. Goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux previously had a stint at Liverpool and currently plays for Swansea City in the EFL Championship.
Eduardo Vargas was Chile's top scorer in World Cup qualifying with three goals, but Sao Paulo's Gonzalo Tapia is expected to lead the line in Lisbon. Twenty-two-year-old Darío Osorio is set to start in a supporting role behind Tapia, after an impressive season in Denmark with Midtjylland.
Chile predicted lineup vs. Portugal (4-2-3-1): Vigouroux; Lichnovsky, Maripan, Sierralta, Suazo; Pizarro, Loyola; Gutierrez, Osorio, Sepulveda; Tapia.
