Manchester United welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to Old Trafford in Wednesday's Carabao Cup third round tie, though they'll look to advance in the tournament without their inspirational skipper Bruno Fernandes, who has been named among the substitutes.
Fernandes has featured for the full 90 minutes in each of Man United's first five matches of the 2026–27 campaign and has already contributed four goals and one assist this term. Nevertheless, with the grueling season still in its early stages and a relentless fixture schedule ahead, Michael Carrick has chosen to give his dynamic playmaker a well-earned breather.
"The fixtures are coming thick and fast, and we have a squad full of talent with everybody pushing to play," Carrick said ahead of the Brighton encounter. "As a group of coaches, players and staff, we want to play as many games as we possibly can this season, so we need to progress through matches like this one and make sure we keep competing on every front."
The opening stages of the Carabao Cup typically present an opportunity for top clubs to shuffle their squads while still putting out a side capable of getting the job done. However, it carries inherent risk, as an early exit would mean surrendering a shot at silverware with the season barely underway in September.
Regardless, Carrick has taken the gamble, resting several key first-team players for Brighton's visit, Fernandes among them.

Carrick Gambles on Youth for Carabao Cup Clash
Just three players who started for United in Sunday's loss to cross-city rivals Manchester City retained their spots in the XI for the Brighton fixture. The tight three-day turnaround has prompted Carrick to reshuffle his squad, placing his faith in a group of promising young talents to get a result against an equally rotated Brighton outfit.
Teenage pair Ayden Heaven and Shea Lacey both earn starting berths on Wednesday. Heaven will line up alongside 20-year-old Leny Yoro at the center of defense, while Lacey gets the nod on the right flank.
Summer signing Youri Tielemans will wear the captain's armband and slot into midfield, with Marcus Rashford also retaining his place on the left wing. Mason Mount steps into Fernandes's customary No. 10 role.
Without kicking a ball yet, United have already progressed further in the Carabao Cup than they did last season, when they were knocked out in the opening round by League Two outfit Grimsby Town. Twelve months on, the Red Devils are eager to avoid a repeat stumble in their cup debut while also seeking a response to a bruising Manchester derby loss.
