Two World Cup Coaches Resign in Disgrace Following Shocking Tournament Eliminations

The Netherlands' Ronald Koeman and Ecuador's Sebastián Beccacece have added their names to the list of coaches who have stepped away from their positions following World Cup elimination.

Koeman's Dutch side had appeared impressive during the group phase, thrashing Sweden 5–1 and comfortably dispatching Tunisia. A lively 2–2 stalemate with Japan had its highlights, though critics had long grown frustrated with Koeman's tactical approach and the apparent shortage of quality in attacking positions.

Facing Morocco, the Netherlands went ahead through a poignant Cody Gakpo—who took to the field after announcing the loss of his unborn son, Elijah—but they couldn't hold on as Issa Diop, a Premier League veteran with West Ham United and Fulham over the past eight years, netted his maiden international goal in stoppage time.

Extra time failed to produce a decisive goal, leaving penalties to determine Koeman and the Dutch side's fate. The Oranje ultimately fell short, going down 3–2, and Koeman, in his second stint at the helm after rejoining the national setup in January 2023, has stepped aside after initially telling the press he would "reflect" on his next steps.

Koeman: We All Had a Dream

Ronald Koeman

"Yesterday evening, I made the decision to resign as head coach of the Netherlands national team," Koeman wrote in a joint statement alongside the Dutch FA. "We all dreamed of a World Cup in which we would make history. That did not come to pass.

"Nobody is more heartbroken about this than I am. As national team manager, you carry that responsibility. I have always felt it and will continue to feel it.

"Football has been my entire life, but health is invaluable," he added, noting that personal circumstances had also influenced his choice. "When someone you love deeply is fighting a difficult battle, your outlook shifts.

"My wife Bartina, despite her own health struggles, has supported and encouraged me every single day to see my role as national team manager through to its conclusion. That speaks to her extraordinary strength. I am more grateful to her for that than words could ever express."

Ecuador's Beccacece Walks Away After Mexico Loss

Sebastián Beccacece

Tuesday evening proved historic for co-hosts Mexico, as they ended a 40-year drought for a knockout stage victory at the World Cup. A well-earned 2–0 triumph in front of a raucous, thunderous Estadio Azteca secured their place in the round of 16, while simultaneously dashing the hopes of Ecuador and coach Beccacece.

"Our contract concluded with the World Cup. I don't believe we were able to deliver on the promise we made: to make this the greatest World Cup ever. Today it falls on me to say farewell," he said after the match, via Reuters.

"I feel gratitude—gratitude for the people, gratitude for the players who gave everything they had. This has been a painful night, but I leave with fond memories of the dressing room this evening. After the game, speaking with the boys … those were two beautiful hours.

"We built something like a family. We didn't accomplish what I said we would, but I feel fulfilled. I know what we created together."

Ecuador had claimed second place in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying to secure their spot at the tournament, finishing ahead of Colombia, Uruguay and Brazil as runners-up to reigning champions Argentina.
