Wrexham vs Hull City and Derby County: The Tiebreaker Rules That Could Decide Their Fate

Wrexham vs Hull City and Derby County: The Tiebreaker Rules That Could Decide Their Fate

Wrexham have never been ones to make things straightforward, and this campaign looks set to be no exception.

Following a 3–1 loss at Coventry City on Sunday, the stage is now set for a dramatic final day of the EFL Championship season, with three clubs scrapping for the last available playoff berth.

The Red Dragons occupy sixth place on 70 points, level with Hull City and one point clear of Derby County in eighth. Phil Parkinson's men hold the final playoff spot by virtue of their superior goal difference, a factor that could prove decisive on the last day of the campaign.

Wrexham have netted 67 goals and shipped 63 in the Championship this season, leaving them with a goal difference of +4. Hull have scored 68 and conceded 65, giving them a goal difference of +3. Derby sit a point behind both Wrexham and Hull but hold a considerably better goal difference of +9.

When sides are level on points, positions are determined by goal difference—should all three clubs end on 70 points, that scenario would benefit Derby. If teams are tied on both points and goal difference, goals scored becomes the deciding factor, which would work in Hull's favor. Should two sides remain inseparable after that, head-to-head record comes into play, which would also favor Hull. The Tigers completed the league double over Wrexham this season and hold a stronger head-to-head record against Derby as well.

Wrexham, Hull City, and Derby County are all locked in a three-way battle for the final playoff spot, a contest that will be settled on the last day of the regular season.

The Red Dragons enter the final matchday in sixth on 70 points, level with Hull but holding a better goal difference. Both sides are ahead of Derby, although the Rams boast a superior goal difference compared to either of them.

Phil Parkinson's squad know that a home victory against fourth-placed Middlesbrough on the final day is essential to keeping their fate in their own hands. Wrexham will secure the last playoff berth as long as they match or better Hull City's result.

The Tigers will claim sixth place if they either surpass Wrexham's result or record a bigger winning margin. Derby can only break into the top six if they outperform both Wrexham and Hull on the final day.

Hull (7th, 70 points)

Derby (8th, 69 points)

Wrexham vs. Middlesbrough (May 2)

Hull vs. Norwich (May 2)

Derby vs. Sheffield Utd (May 2)

Wrexham face the most challenging assignment of the three playoff-chasing sides on the final day of the EFL Championship season.

Phil Parkinson's team welcome Middlesbrough to the Racecourse Ground, with the visitors still pushing for an automatic promotion place. Boro currently sit fourth in the Championship, just a single point off second, and will require a win to keep any hope of going up automatically.

Hull City have managed only two wins from their last 11 outings and face yet another stern challenge when they host an in-form Norwich City side on the final day. The Canaries can finish no higher than ninth this term but have been in superb form, accumulating more points than any other Championship club over the past 25 matches.

Derby County remain firmly in contention for a playoff place, but will require both Wrexham and Hull to slip up on the final day to keep their hopes alive. The Rams host 15th-place Sheffield United next weekend and are well aware that only a victory will give them any chance of sneaking into the last playoff position.
