Wrexham overtook Hull City to claim sixth place following a tight 1-0 win against Oxford United in the EFL Championship.
Phil Parkinson's men now hold the final playoff spot with only two regular season matches remaining after Josh Windass netted the game's sole goal. The Red Dragons knew they needed to handle their own affairs to keep their promotion push alive and received a helping hand as Leicester City held Hull City to a 1-1 draw on the same evening.
The win moves Wrexham up to sixth in the Championship standings on 70 points. They are tied on points with the Tigers but hold a superior goal difference by two. Wrexham now enjoys a four-point cushion over Derby County, who are now heavy outsiders to claim a playoff berth.
Wrexham have already achieved the greatest finish in the club's 162-year history and are now just two games from a spot in the end-of-season playoffs, where one team will earn promotion to the Premier League.
Wrexham Standings: EFL Championship With Two Matches Remaining
Place | Team | Points | Goal difference | Games played |
|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Coventry (C) | 89 | +46 | 44 |
2 | Millwall | 79 | +13 | 44 |
3 | Ipswich | 76 | +29 | 42 |
4 | Southampton | 76 | +24 | 44 |
5 | Middlesbrough | 73 | +20 | 43 |
6 | Wrexham | 70 | +6 | 44 |
7 | Hull City | 70 | +4 | 44 |
8 | Derby County | 66 | +8 | 44 |
Wrexham currently sit sixth in the EFL Championship with 70 points from 44 matches this campaign. With only six points still available, an automatic promotion finish is out of reach. The Red Dragons could still climb to fifth, however, as they face Middlesbrough on the final day of the season.
Coventry City were crowned champions after beating Portsmouth at home on Tuesday, while Millwall secured a victory away at Stoke to tighten their hold on second place. Ipswich Town have two games in hand in the automatic promotion race and travel to face Charlton Athletic on Wednesday. Southampton sit fourth after being held by Bristol City, and Middlesbrough take on already-relegated Sheffield United on Wednesday evening.
Hull City slipped to seventh after drawing away at Leicester City on the night the Foxes were condemned to League One. Derby County suffered a defeat away at Norwich City, a result that seriously dented their playoff ambitions.

Wrexham undoubtedly face the toughest remaining schedule of the three clubs battling for sixth place this season.
Phil Parkinson's squad hit the road again this weekend when they travel to take on champions Coventry City on the day the trophy is lifted. Things don't get any simpler on the final day when the Red Dragons welcome playoff rivals Middlesbrough to North Wales.
Hull City remain very much in contention for sixth and head into their last away fixture of the campaign this weekend against Charlton Athletic. They then host in-form Norwich City on the final day of the regular season, as the battle for playoff spots could go down to the wire.
Derby County are long shots in the playoff picture but appear to have the most favorable schedule of the three sides still vying for sixth. They travel to mid-table Queens Park Rangers this weekend before wrapping up their season at home against Sheffield United.
