Wrexham's Playoff Hopes Hang by a Thread: Everything They Must Do on the Season's Final Day

There is a great deal on the line on the final day of the EFL Championship season, with Wrexham looking to keep their dream of a fourth consecutive promotion alive.

The Red Dragons head into the weekend in sixth place, occupying the last playoff position. The top two sides earn automatic promotion to the Premier League, while teams finishing third through sixth battle it out in the playoffs for the remaining spot.

Regardless of what unfolds, Wrexham have already surpassed expectations, achieving the highest league finish in the club's 162-year history. Phil Parkinson considers the season a success no matter the result—but Wrexham could still be just four wins away from the Premier League.

Here's what has to happen.

Wrexham, Hull City and Derby County are all fighting for sixth place. Coventry City have already clinched the title, while Ipswich Town, Millwall and Middlesbrough are competing for the last automatic promotion berth. Southampton are the only club guaranteed a playoff place.

Wrexham and Hull are both on 70 points, with Wrexham leading on goal difference. Derby are one point adrift. This means that if either Wrexham or Hull pick up a win, Derby will be eliminated from contention.

The basics are straightforward:

If sides are tied on points, positions are determined by goal difference, then goals scored, then head-to-head record.

If both Wrexham and Hull win, Wrexham must match or surpass Hull's winning margin to retain sixth. Hull will claim the spot if they win by a greater margin.

Hull have netted one more goal than Wrexham this season, making goals scored an unlikely decider. An unusual scenario—such as Wrexham winning 5–3 while Hull win 3–0—would see Wrexham take sixth on goals scored.

Should the two clubs finish level on points, goal difference and goals scored, Hull would secure sixth place based on head-to-head results.

If Wrexham fail to get a result against Middlesbrough, they will need results to go their way elsewhere.

If both Wrexham and Hull lose while Derby draw with Sheffield United, Derby would claim sixth place thanks to a better goal difference.

If all three sides lose, goal difference will be the deciding factor:
