Wrexham's Promotion Hopes Shattered in Dramatic, Gut-Wrenching Final Day Collapse

Wrexham's hopes of reaching the EFL Championship playoffs were dashed on Saturday after a 2–2 stalemate with Middlesbrough left them finishing seventh in the final table.

Phil Parkinson's men entered the day sitting sixth — the last available playoff position — but faced a stern test against a Middlesbrough outfit still chasing automatic promotion. The razor-thin margins meant any stumble could be exploited by both Hull City and Derby County.

Middlesbrough struck within just four minutes, around the same time Derby took the lead against Sheffield United, pushing Wrexham out of the playoff places and setting the stage for a frantic battle for sixth place.

Wrexham drew level through Josh Windass in the 28th minute and appeared poised to head into the break ahead after Sam Smith's commanding header four minutes before half-time, only for David Strelec to equalise just two minutes later.

Derby ultimately fell out of the final playoff spot, suffering a 2–1 loss to Sheffield United, but it was Hull who proved to be Wrexham's undoing as they moved 2–1 ahead of Norwich City with 20 minutes left on the clock.

Parkinson reacted by deploying two forwards, bringing on the imposing Kieffer Moore for the closing stages, but despite their determined efforts, Wrexham could not find a way past the Middlesbrough defence.

Anxious supporters watched on, hoping for Hull to falter, but the Tigers kept their composure and secured a vital victory over Norwich to clinch the fourth and final playoff berth.

Hull now join Millwall, Southampton and Middlesbrough in a four-team battle for a place in the Premier League, with the victor set to accompany champions Coventry City and runners-up Ipswich Town in England's top division next season.

As for Wrexham, the focus shifts to gearing up for another Championship campaign, with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's Premier League ambitions placed on hold for at least one more year.
