Alphonso Davies Racing Against Time: Latest Recovery Update and Expected Comeback for Canada's Star

Canada skipper Alphonso Davies is in a desperate race to be fit from a hamstring problem ahead of the 2026 World Cup, but the 25-year-old appears to be facing a significant challenge.

Davies picked up the injury during Bayern Munich's 1–1 stalemate with Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semifinal second leg on May 6 and did not appear again in 2025–26. The left back was also absent from Canada's 2–0 victory over Uzbekistan, the first of two pre-World Cup warm-up games, although he was present on the bench for the fixture.

Davies's arrival at Jesse Marsch's camp eased some concerns, yet serious doubts remain over the fullback's availability with Canada's World Cup debut set for June 12. The Bayern Munich star has endured a difficult 15 months, spending more time on the treatment table than the field following an ACL injury and a string of other setbacks since March 2025.

Here's the latest update on Davies's condition ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

What Injury Does Alphonso Davies Have?

Alphonso Davies

The most recent setback for Davies is a muscle strain in his left hamstring. Bayern Munich confirmed the injury on May 8, shortly after their Champions League exit.

Davies featured for just 22 minutes plus added time in the match, entering as a substitute in the 68th minute. Despite the limited appearance, he provided the assist for Harry Kane's only goal of the evening, his sixth goal contribution of 2026.

The injury occurred less than a month after Davies had returned from a different hamstring complaint. With Canada targeting a historic run to the knockout rounds in just its third-ever World Cup appearance this summer, Marsch is taking every precaution with his star player.

"What we don't want to do is put [Davies] in a situation to suffer again and to be vulnerable again. You can imagine that he wants to build up his body and trust his body in all ways, so that he can go out and play football and do the things he loves," Marsch said following Canada's win over Uzbekistan.

"So we're gonna make sure that as a staff that we do a good job of really looking at him every single day, monitoring every single day, and putting him in position to succeed, and I'm sure we will."

When Will Alphonso Davies Return From Injury?

Neither Canada nor Bayern Munich have given a definitive timeline for Davies's comeback, though the player indicated he is making good progress when he spoke to the media on Monday evening, 10 days before Canada's tournament opener.

"We just have to see how everything goes over the next couple days," Davies said. "I'll just continue my rehab, my progression, and see how I'm feeling, day by day, step by step."

Davies is widely expected to sit out the Reds' second warm-up friendly against the Republic of Ireland on Friday, June 5. He is also considered doubtful for Canada's fixture against Bosnia and Herzegovina at BMO Field, potentially leaving Marsch without his key player at the start of the host nation's World Cup campaign.

While Canada would ideally want Davies back for the opener, the team may have to wait until the second group stage match against Qatar on June 18 to have their captain available.

Marsch's side wrap up Group B action against Switzerland on June 24.
