Portugal Unveil 2026 World Cup Squad Numbers: Ronaldo and Fernandes Lead the Charge

Even casual soccer fans can recognize—or may even own—one of Portugal's iconic red jerseys, a cultural staple made famous by Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Seleção das Quinas will once again sport their signature red this summer as they chase their maiden World Cup title. The grandest World Cup in history sets the stage for what is widely expected to be Ronaldo's final shot at claiming the long-coveted trophy.

Portugal boasts a supporting cast capable of making a deep tournament run in North America, largely thanks to an elite midfield. The added confidence from their 2024–25 UEFA Nations League triumph only amplifies the team's belief.

Roberto Martínez's squad now officially knows the shirt numbers they'll carry this summer in their quest for World Cup glory, headlined by the legendary holder of the No. 7 jersey.

Portugal's Key Stars Hold On to Their Preferred Numbers

Vitinha

There are few surprises in Portugal's World Cup squad numbers. Ronaldo naturally keeps his iconic No. 7 shirt, just as Bernardo Silva holds on to the No. 10.

Bruno Fernandes, recently honored as both FWA and Premier League Player of the Season following his record-setting campaign with Manchester United, retains his No. 8—the same number he wears for the Red Devils.

The Paris Saint-Germain trio of Vitinha, João Neves, and Nuno Mendes all kept their respective numbers as well. Vitinha's No. 23 continues to raise eyebrows, given it's not a digit typically associated with arguably the finest midfielder on the planet. He wore No. 10 for the back-to-back Champions League champions in 2025–26, but that number belongs to Silva for as long as he remains active.

Pedro Neto is another player who must settle for a different number than the one he wears at club level. The winger dons No. 7 for Chelsea, but will continue wearing No. 18 for Portugal as long as Ronaldo remains part of the national setup.

Rúben Neves Honors the Memory of Diogo Jota

Rúben Neves

Rúben Neves will once again wear No. 21 as a tribute to Diogo Jota, who tragically lost his life in a car accident alongside his brother André Silva last July. Neves shared a close bond with the late Liverpool forward, having played alongside him for the national team, FC Porto, and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

"We've spoken about it many times and we always say the same thing," Neves said on Monday when asked about Jota ahead of Portugal's World Cup warm-up fixtures against Chile and Nigeria.

"Sometimes you need something to hold on to that gives you that extra bit of strength. That will be one of the things that can provide us with that strength at key moments and help us reach where we want to be."

Neves had previously paid his respects to Jota after netting his first-ever international goal during the October break, a stoppage-time winner in Portugal's 1–0 victory over the Republic of Ireland. The Al Hilal midfielder unveiled a tattoo dedicated to his late friend, featuring the No. 21 across his back—the same number he will proudly carry this summer.
